JONESBORO, Ark. – Two programs that have a long history against each other square off Tuesday night when Louisiana Tech travels to First National Bank Arena to face the Arkansas State Red Wolves in the 40
th meeting of the series.
          Â
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Although both LA Tech head coach
Brooke Stoehr and Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer are very familiar with their respective opponents in the match-up, none of the players on either team are. Tech (3-1) and Arkansas State (1-2) have not met since 2013-14, thus not a single player on either roster has ever faced their Tuesday night opponent.
Boyer is in his 20
th year as the Red Wolves head coach and has faced the Lady Techsters 12 times in his ASU coaching career (1-11), including a 91-68 victory over LA Tech in the last meeting. Stoehr was 8-0 against Arkansas State as a player during her time as a Lady Techster (1998-2002).
          Â
"It will be a tough game," said Stoehr. "I tried to explain to our team in the locker room (after the Memphis win). They don't get that. They don't understand that. But having played there during my career, I definitely understand how difficult it is."
          Â
Tech leads the all-time series 36-3, but has had some epic battles against the Red Wolves (formerly Indians) during their time together in the American South Conference (1987-91) and Sun Belt Conference (1991-2001). Two of ASU's wins in the series came in Jonesboro and four more games were decided by four points or less.
          Â
The game will feature two teams that have scored the basketball at a pretty high clip this year. LA Tech enters the game averaging 84.0 points per game and shooting 44 percent from the field while Arkansas State is averaging 76.0 points per game and shooting 43 percent from the field.
          Â
Arkansas State boasts three players averaging double figures, led by Peyton Martin (19.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg), Jireh Washington (13.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and Akasha Westbrooks (11.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg).
          Â
"They have a good team," said Stoehr. "They are deep. They play a lot of players. They have played a difficult schedule. They went to Oklahoma State and lost by two. They beat Memphis at home. They lost in overtime Sunday at UT-Martin. They can score it. They have a number of players that can score it. They play very hard. We have to be very sharp, much sharper than we were on the defensive end today."
          Â
Just like his counterpart, Boyer knows his team will be in for a challenge on Tuesday night at home.
          Â
"UT Martin is a very good team and just another of the good teams we've played to this point," said Boyer following his team's loss Saturday. "We may have the best one we've played Tuesday against Louisiana Tech. I think our players are excited about that. Let's keep playing against good competition and see how we handle it."
          Â
Tech enters the game on a modest two-game winning streak after its 66-50 victory over Memphis on Sunday. The Lady Techsters continue to get consistent production from senior guards
Kierra Anthony (28.0 ppg, 28-31 FTs) and
Taylor Stahly (13.8 ppg, 13-38 three-pointers) as the duo have combined for seven double digit scoring performances in the first four games.
          Â
The Lady Techsters also received some help off the bench in the win over Memphis as sophomore
Raizel Guinto scored 13 points and senior
Zhanae Whitney added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double double of the season.
          Â
Fans can tune into the contest on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM (Ruston) and KJVC 92.7 FM with the pregame show starting at 6:30 p.m. Fans can also access a free audio stream though the Louisiana Tech X mobile app.
