RUSTON, La. – One day after being named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, Louisiana Tech's
Jaylon Ferguson has been named Second Team All-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Â
This is the 129th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team – the nation's oldest All-America team. Twenty-five players have been selected to the first team by the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. In addition, 25 players were selected to the Second Team.
Â
Ferguson is the only Conference USA player represented on this year's Walter Camp All-America teams. In all, 29 different schools from 10 conferences (including independents) were represented on the All-America First and Second Teams (a total of 50 players selected).
Â
On Wednesday, Ferguson became the first Bulldog to be named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year since LA Tech joined the league in 2013, while it marked the 11th time in program history the Bulldogs have garnered a defensive superlative award.
Â
As a senior in 2018, Ferguson totaled a single-season record 15 sacks for the Bulldogs, while he has already broken the Louisiana Tech and C-USA records for career sacks (42.5). With one game left to play, Ferguson is 1.5 sacks shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for career sacks held by Terrell Suggs (44).
Â
Ferguson's 15 sacks in 2018 is tied for the nation's lead, while his 23.5 tackles for loss this year ranks first in C-USA and third in the country. Earlier this week, Ferguson was named one of four finalists for the Ted Hendricks Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive end, while he also earned first team All-Conference USA honors on Tuesday for the third straight season.
Â
This season, Ferguson became one of just six non-Power 5 players in the last 10 years to be named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award. Through 12 games, he recorded 59 total tackles (33 solo), while also registering nine quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles as a senior.
Â
The 2018 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization's 52nd annual national awards banquet, presented by David McDermott Lexus of New Haven, on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn.. Major award winners (Distinguished American-Archie Manning, Man of the Year-Mike Golic, and Perseverance Award-Jake Olson of USC) will also be honored that evening.
Â
The Bulldogs will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, in the next few weeks to compete against the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors in the SoFi Hawai'i Bowl on Dec. 22 at Aloha Stadium. The game is set for a 9:30 p.m. CT kickoff and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
