LA Tech vs. McNeese box
LAKE CHARLES, La. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team won on one doubles line, but that was all that went their way on the courts on a chilly Monday afternoon as they fell 7-0 to in-state foe McNeese State at the Nancy Hanks Tennis Center.
The lone win of the day for LA Tech (1-3) came from junior Sonia Chen and freshman Claudia Oravcova teaming up for the very first time this season and winning 6-4 on court three.
However, McNeese State (1-0) won 6-1 on courts one and two to take the doubles point and were able to secure victories on all six singles courts to win their season opener at home.
LA Tech's singles lineup was completely reshuffled by head coach Amanda Stone. After playing all three dual matches this season at the No. 4 spot, Chen was moved all the way to the top of the lineup. She went toe-for-toe with the Cowgirls Giovanna Fioretti but lost 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Nadja Manjon played her second straight match at the No. 2 position. She unfortunately let a break in the third set slip away and suffered her first dual loss of the spring with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 defeat by Sarah Jurakova.
McNeese State was able to get straight-set wins on courts three, five and six. Freshman Karla De La Luz Montalvo was the final match left, playing at the No. 4 spot for the first time.
She dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but battled back to win the second set 6-4 and force a super breaker where she lost, 10-5, to Charoline Erlandsson. It was her first singles dual loss of the spring as well.
Next up for LA Tech is another rescheduled match. The Lady Techsters will take on the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Wednesday, Feb. 14 in their home opener. First serve is set for noon.
