BATON ROUGE, La. ââ'¬" Junior Preslee Gallaway tossed a complete game to lead Louisiana Tech to a 4-1 victory over Southern Utah Sunday morning in the fifth and final game of the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by LSU.
Gallaway (2-2) allowed just one run on five hits and two walks while recording five strikeouts as the Lady Techsters improved to 5-7 on the season. Tech posted a 3-2 mark at the tournament, with the only setbacks being a 2-1 extra inning loss to No. 7 LSU and a 2-0 loss to Oregon State.
Gallaway saw the first three hitters of the game record singles against her but got out of the bottom of the first jam with back-to-back strikeouts. Southern Utah would only record two more hits in the game, a leadoff double in the third and a two-out RBI single in the third as SUU cut the Tech lead to 2-1.
Tech plated its first two runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Katie Smith drew a one-out walk, stole second base and then advanced to third on an error by the SUU shortstop. After Taria Page walked, pinch runner Kailey Anderson stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out.
Sloane Stewartson recorded her first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring Smith. Ali Galaz then walked to put runners on the corners. Tech then completed a successful double steal as Anderson scored the second run of the inning.
Tech struggled offensively with only three infield hits through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth inning, pinch hitter Kimmie Atienza ââ'¬" who was one of the heroes of Saturday's win over Central Arkansas ââ'¬" led off with a double to left field. Berkley Calapp then reached on a questionable E5 call to put runners on first and third.
Karlee Jensen then laid down a bunt single that scored Atienza to make the score 3-0. Jazlyn Crowder followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Following a force out at home on a Morgan Turkoly ground ball back to the pitcher, pinch hitter Bayli Simon singled to centerfield scoring Jensen to make the score 4-0.
Gallaway worked a clean sixth and seventh inning to seal the win, retiring the final 11 batters of the game.
Jensen (2-2, run, RBI), Atienza (1-1, run), Stewartson (1-3, RBI), Crowder (1-2, SB), Turkoly (1-4, SB), Smith (run, SB), Simon (1-1, RBI), Anderson (run, SB) and Galaz (2BB, SB) led Tech offensively.
The Lady Techsters will return home to host the Louisiana Tech Invitational Friday through Sunday in Ruston.
