RUSTON, La. ââ'¬" Four Louisiana Tech pitchers combined to not allow an earned run Saturday but a costly error followed by a two-run home run led to a split for the Lady Techsters in Saturday action.
Tech (8-8) defeated UMass-Lowell 6-0 in the first game of the day before falling 2-0 to Missouri State in the nightcap. The Lady Techsters will finish action in the tournament Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Alcorn State.
Game 1: LA Tech 6, UMass Lowell 0
Louisiana Tech scratched for runs in four straight innings and Bailey Allen and Jenny Chapman combined to toss a four-hit shutout as the Lady Techsters defeated the Riverhawks 6-0.
Morgan Turkoly and Sloane Stewartson each recorded a pair of hits and Turkoly, Jazlyn Crowder, Katie Smith, Addison Roark and Marilyn Rizzato each registered RBIs in the first shutout of the year for the Lady Techsters.
Turkoly gave Tech a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out, RBI single up the middle, scoring Kimmie Ateinza who had walked and stolen a base with two outs.
Stewartson and pinch hitter Kailey Anderson led the fourth inning off with singles. After Anderson and pinch runner Emily Daniel stole second and third, Katie Smith drove Daniel home with a ground ball to third base. Marilyn Rizzato then made it 3-0 with an RBI bunt single that scored Anderson.
Allen (2-0) worked four scoreless innings in the circle, allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out five batters. Chapman came on in relief in the fifth inning and earned her first save of the season, retiring nine of the 11 batters she faced while allowing just one hit.
Tech added a run in the fifth inning. Turkoly singled and stole second base ââ'¬" one of eight steals in the game by Tech ââ'¬" and then scored on Crowder's single to left field. After Stewartson singled to put runners on the corners, Tech executed a double steal as Crowder crossed the plate to make it 5-0.
Katie Smith led off the sixth with a single and stole second and then scored on Roark's single to left field.
Game 2: Missouri State 2, LA Tech 0
Missouri State pitcher Steffany Dickerson shut down Louisiana Tech for seven innings, holding the Lady Techsters to four singles while striking out four in the complete-game victory.
Tech's Krystal De La Cruz and Preslee Gallaway were almost as impressive, but a two-out, two-run home run by Darian Frost in the fifth inning was the difference.
De La Cruz pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. Gallaway came on in relief to start the fifth, but a fielding error kept the inning alive and Frost took advantage with the two-run shot to left centerfield.
Turkoly, Stewartson, Rizzato and Bayli Simon each recorded one hit in the loss.
