@LATechWBB Faces Defensive Middle Tennessee Saturday

LA Tech continues its gauntlet of tough teams to start league play

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – As is the life in Conference USA play, Louisiana Tech had one night to enjoy its road win over league leader UAB before head coach Brooke Stoehr and Co. refocused on its next opponent.

The Lady Techsters (9-7, 1-2 C-USA), fresh of a 73-68 come-from-behind victory over the Blazers, will return to action when they face Middle Tennessee (12-4, 3-0 C-USA) Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Murphy Center. The game will be on ESPN+ and can also be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM and KJVC 92.7 FM.

Tech used a game-ending 12-0 run over the final two and a half minutes in snapping UAB's 10-game winning streak. Now the Lady Techsters must dig deep and find a way to handle a Blue Raiders squad that has won three straight games and five of their last six.

Through Thursday's games, Middle Tennessee now ranks No. 1 in C-USA in scoring defense (56.5 ppg) but only No. 9 in field goal percentage defense (.405) and No. 13 in three-point field goal percentage defense (.360).

Stoehr knows her team will be in for another challenge.

"We are going to have to do a great job there," said Stoehr. "They are going to have a lot of ball screen action. They have one of the best post players in the league in Alex Johnson. They are very well coached. They play very hard. We are going to have to find a way to score because I think they are solid, solid defensively.

"They have size inside. We aren't going to get extra, easy touches in there. We have to find a way to get open on the perimeter and be able to score out of that. We have to find a way to get some turnovers that will lead to some transition points."

Middle Tennessee boasts two of the league's top 10 scorers in transfer guard A'Queen Hayes (15.6 ppg) and Johnson (14.7 ppg) and a handful of shooters that can do damage from beyond the arc.

"They have a transfer guard (in Hayes) from Ole Miss that's been really good for them and a freshman in (Taylor) Sutton who has been solid," said Stoehr. "They have their shooters on the perimeter (Jess) Luoro and (Anna) Jones. We have to do a great job on Saturday."

Although Tech continues to be led by senior Kierra Anthony (25.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg), the Lady Techsters got some solid contributions from its supporting cast in the win over UAB. Sophomore Amber Dixon scored 12 points off the bench, including 10 of the final 12 in the second quarter, while Reauna Cleaver added a season-high eight points, all coming in the third quarter.

Down the stretch with the game on the line, Raizel Guinto (three-pointer), Taylor Stahly (2 free throws) and Nikki McDonald (2 free throws) all came up big on the offensive end as Tech used an 18-4 run to close the game after trailing 64-55 with less than five minutes to play.

Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series 6-5, although Tech snapped a six-game losing streak against the Blue Raiders with a 66-49 win in Murfreesboro last season.

This marks the fourth straight game for LA Tech against the top teams (by win totals) in C-USA (North Texas, Rice, UAB, Middle Tennessee).
