Anthony scores 34 in road loss at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Kierra Anthony scored 34 points but Louisiana Tech missed four key free throws with a chance to ice the game in the first overtime and eventually fell 90-88 in triple overtime Thursday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Tech also hurt itself with 27 turnovers, although 16 came in a first half that saw the Lady Techsters trail just 27-24 at the break.

"It's disappointing," said Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr. "We had 16 turnovers at the half. It was ridiculous. They weren't pressing us. It was just poor decisions and us not playing with poise. You can't turn the ball over 27 times on the road and expect to win. We put ourselves in a bad spot.

"I appreciate our effort. We got a number of stops down the stretch when we had to have them in overtimes. We were put in some really difficult positions and that's all I will say about that. When you have a chance and you are up four and you have a chance to close out a game and you miss free throws, it's just disappointing. We have to be able to make those plays when you are on the road and be able to closes out games."

Tech (10-10, 2-5) held a 74-70 lead with 35 seconds to play in the first overtime but missed four straight free throws – its only four misses from the free throw line on the night – and Marshall (11-8, 5-1) capitalized. Khadaijia Brooks, who entered the game just 11-of-47 from the three-point line on the season, drained her third three-pointer of the night with 15 seconds to play to tie the score at 75-75.

Anthony had a chance to win it but her three-pointer at the buzzer rolled out, sending the game into a second OT. Marshall took a 4-point lead in the second OT, but Tech fought back holding the Herd scoreless over the final 3:19 of the overtime. Anthony scored four points over the final few minutes and both teams missed potential game-winning shots on their final possessions.

"That is sometimes how basketball goes," said Stoehr. "You have to be tough enough to take care of the ball. We put ourselves in a really bad spot when you turn it over 27 times. It puts too much pressure on your defense to be perfect. It takes away opportunities to score. This is one that is going to eat at us for a while but it can't because we have a quick turnaround. We have to go to Western who is one of the best teams in the league.

In the third overtime, Marshall took the early lead once again. However, an Anthony three-pointer with 1:38 to play tied the game at 88-88. Both teams had opportunities late but couldn't score. However, Marshall came up with an offensive rebound and Herd forward Taylor Pearson was fouled with two seconds to play. Pearson hit both free throws and Anthony's last closely contested three-pointer at the buzzer was short as the Herd came away with the win.

"I thought we had a number of players step up and really talk," said Stoehr. "They shoot the three well and they made nine, but I thought we did a pretty decent job guarding them. We ran Gore off the three-point line which was big for us to contain her. We played 15 extra minutes so that's a lot of extra time to score more so numbers are skewed. We needed one more defensive rebound down on that last possession and we get called for a block. Tough call and it didn't go our way. I thought we had a number of those but you have to be 5 or 10 points better on the road."

Amber Dixon scored 18 points, her fourth double digit scoring game in the last five, and added seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks while Raizel Guinto chipped in with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Zhanae Whitney added a career-high 14 rebounds as Tech outboarded Marshall 49-38.

Shayna Gore led Marshall with 30 points while Taylor Porter added 22 points and Brooks chipped in with 19 points.

Tech returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. WKU.
