RUSTON, La. –
Raizel Guinto hit five three-pointers to lead six players in double figures as Louisiana Tech outpaced Southeastern Louisiana Friday night at the Thomas Assembly Center by a score of 92-78.
Tech (6-3) built a 17-point first quarter lead and then held off a couple of Southeastern (3-5) rallies that saw the Lions cut the deficit to as few as seven points in the third quarter.
However, the Lady Techsters were able to find enough offense on a night that saw plenty of it from both teams to pull out their fifth win in six home games this season. Tech committed just 12 turnovers in the game and outrebounded Southeastern Louisiana by 13 in the ninth straight win over the Lions.
"I thought we did a nice job taking care of the ball," said Stoehr. "Only 12 turnovers. I like that number. Anytime we can be below 15 then I'm good with that. We played a lot of people tonight. I liked a lot of what we did offensively. I thought we moved the ball. I thought we shared the ball. I thought we got off to a really good start."
Tech built a 28-14 lead at the end of the first quarter despite a 40-foot desperation shot by Lions guard Celica Sterling that found net as the buzzer sounded to end the opening 10 minutes of play. Tech hit 12-of-18 free throws in the quarter while shooting 7-of-11 from the field.
"This team is at its best when it shares the ball," said Stoehr. "I thought we moved the ball really well in the first half."
Tech led 45-34 at the end of the first half. The Lions made a run in the third quarter, cutting the Tech lead down to 54-47 on a layup by Aminati Jubril with just under five minutes to play in the frame. Southeastern Louisiana shot 50 percent from the field in the second half (14-28) and 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Â
"I was a little disappointed in our defensive effort," said Stoehr. "I thought our defense in the first quarter was really good. I thought we pressured the ball; really kept people in front of us and played solid with five people defending at all times. But we lost their leading scorer too many times. I think that is where this team has to continue to grow up. We put them at the free throw line too many times tonight too. They scored 78. There are just some things we have to do better defensively."
Guinto scored 15 points and added four assists while
Keiunna Walker and
Amber Dixon each added 13 points.
Anna Larr Roberson chipped in with 12 points and
Grayson Bright and
Amber Hawkison each netted 10 points in the win. Bri Harris added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds in her first start of the season.
Tech returns to action Monday when it hosts Grambling State at 6:30 p.m.
