Techsters, Herd to play rubber game Sunday

HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Louisiana Tech used a seven-run seventh inning to record a come-from-behind 10-8 win over Marshall in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field in Conference USA action.

Marshall took game two by a score of 10-2 in five innings. The two teams will play the rubber game on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

Game 1: LA Tech 10, Marshall 8

Trailing 5-3 heading into its final at bat, Louisiana Tech erupted for seven runs on six hits against three different Marshall pitchers to pick up the game one victory.

Morgan Turkoly doubled home two runs to tie the game at 5-5 and Jazlyn Crowder followed with an RBI double. Marilyn Rizzato and Mary Terral each registered two-run hits to cap the scoring and give Tech a 10-5 advantage.

Marshall hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh before Jenny Chapman induced a pop up for the final out of the game.

Kimmie Atienza hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning – her third of the year – to provide Tech an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Techsters then plated a pair of unearned runs on a two-out throwing error by Marshall in the fourth as the lead increased to 3-0.

Hayden Ellis hit a solo home run – the first of her three on the day – off Tech starter Krystal De La Cruz in the bottom of the fourth. Marshall then scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, chasing De La Cruz from the game.

Chapman held the Herd (27-16, 10-7) in check and provided the Tech offense a chance in the top of the seventh. With one out, AJ Williams singled and Atienza walked. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, Turkoly lined a pitch down the left field line for a two-run double, tying the game at 5-5.

Crowder followed with a double off the left field fence, giving Tech a 6-5 lead and chasing Abigail Tolbert from the game. Sloane Stewartson singled and Lindsay Edwards reached on a fielders choice to load the bases.

After a ground ball forced an out at home, Rizzato blooped a single to right field, scoring two and upping the lead to 8-5. Terral then laced a single to left field to end the seven-run frame.

Chapman (3-0) got the win in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

Game 2: Marshall 10, LA Tech 2 (5 innings)

Marshall hit three more home runs, including a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, to run rule LA Tech 10-2 in the second game of the day.

The Thundering Herd scored in the first and then four more in the second on a pair of two-run home runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead through two innings. Trailing 6-0, Tech scored two runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bayli Simon and an RBI double by Marilyn Rizzato.

Tech starter Preslee Gallaway (14-7) managed just two innings, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk before giving way to freshman Hannah Koenig. Koenig pitched a solid third and fourth innings – allowing just one run – before loading the bases in the fifth and surrendering the game-ending grand slam.
