RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech will jump right back on its horse Thursday night when the Lady Techster host UTSA at 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech (8-4, 0-1 C-USA) saw its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 66-60 loss at Southern Miss in the Conference USA opener for both teams. The Lady Techsters will host a two-game homestand this weekend, including Thursday night's match-up against the Roadrunners (5-8, 1-1) and a Saturday contest against UTEP.
Both contests can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM with the pregame show starting 30 minutes prior to tipoff. Fans can also watch a live video stream of the games through a paid subscription to CUSATV.com.
"We are going to be fine," said Tech head coach
Brooke Stoehr. "We have to continue to get better. That is our focus with this young group. Whether we had won (against Southern Miss) or not, there are areas that we are still working on. We are going to find ways to win these tough Conference USA games. This group will be okay."
Tech has shown recent improvements on the boards and in cutting down on its turnovers, two areas that plagued the Lady Techsters during the first 10 games of the season. Tech committed just 16 turnovers against Southern Miss but shot only 33 percent from the field in the loss.
Amber Dixon (10.6 ppg, 29 assists),
Keiunna Walker (10.1 ppg, 15 steals),
Raizel Guinto (9.1 ppg, 39 assists) and
Anna Larr Roberson (8.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg) continue to pace Tech offensively. The Lady Techsters have also been solid defensively most of the season, holding opponents to just 64.5 points a contest.
"Our numbers are pretty good defensively," said Stoehr. "We are giving up just under 65 a game and that number would be even more impressive if we can stop the live ball turnovers that other teams are turning into transition uncontested buckets. We just have to continue to get better on both ends of the floor and we will."
UTSA split a pair of Conference USA games at home this past weekend, falling to Florida Atlantic (80-53) before bouncing back to defeat FIU (60-45). The Roadrunners are led by Mikayla Woods (13.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg), Adryana Quezada (12.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), Karrington Donald (9.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Charlene Mass (8.2 ppg).
Defensively, UTSA has struggled, ranking towards the bottom of C-USA in defensive field goal percent (.435) and points allowed per game (72.8).
Tech leads the all-time series against UTSA 10-4. The Roadrunner won last year's sole meeting 70-68 in San Antonio.
