Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Malcolm Butler

Late Free Throws Lead @LATechWBB to Win

RUSTON, La. – Keiunna Walker, Anna Larr Roberson and Amber Dixon combined for 54 points and 28 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech to a 68-65 victory over UL-Lafayette Sunday afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Tech (5-1) connected on 16-of-18 free throws in the game, including 12-of-14 in the fourth quarter, to overcome late deficits and improve to 41-2 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns (1-4).

"These games are always crazy around the break and as coaches you're always worried about wondering if your kids are going to be mentally checked out," said Stoehr. "We were really locked in the past few days, and we talked about finishing well at home and being undefeated against all the in-state schools and just making sure they were aware of that.

"Bottom line, though, down the stretch when we had to make plays, we did. I thought Anna Larr was huge on some rebounds and making plays when we needed to score. Amber Dixon was tremendous on defense and on the boards. Walker didn't shoot it well today, but she was 8-for-8 from the free throw line after missing three on Thursday night. We needed a contribution from everybody tonight, and it was good to get a win going into the break."

Walker scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Roberson added a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double double and her third of the year. Dixon recorded her first career double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists.

Roberson scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and added two blocked shots over the final quarter to help the Lady Techsters rally for the win.

"I challenged (Anna Larr) at halftime," said Stoehr. "She only had three rebounds at the half, and she ended up with 11. The best part about her is that you call her out and tell her and she'll say, 'Don't worry, I got you.' That's exactly what she said in the locker room. She comes out and gets eight in the second half. She and Dixon had some huge ones down the stretch there."

In a game that saw 11 ties and 10 lead changes, the fourth quarter saw plenty of it. With the game tied at 62-62, Roberson connected on a jump shot with 1:17 to play to give the Lady Techsters a two-point advantage.

UL-Lafayette trimmed the deficit to 64-63 on a free throw by Ty Doucet with 51 seconds to play. Following a LA Tech turnover, the Ragin Cajuns retook the lead on a Doucet layup with 20.4 seconds remaining in the game.

Following a timeout by Tech, Walker drew a foul on the ensuing inbounds play, stepped to the free throw line and calmly sank two free throws as the Lady Techsters led 66-65.

"Keiunna had a tough shooting day, but we've got to do a better job of fighting for good shots and good ball reversal," said Stoehr. "You still want the ball in her hands because she draws so much attention. She had three assists and had passes to knockdown shooters that we just didn't make today. This team will continue to evolve, and we're nowhere near where we can be offensively. I thought we hung in there and held them to 65 when that stretch in the third quarter they got some transition points off turnovers."
ULL had two chance to retake the advantage but misfired on a pair of jump shots and Roberson pulled down the rebound and made the pass to Dixon who was fouled.

With 1.7 seconds to play Dixon sank both free throws to make the score 68-65. Following a Ragin Cajun timeout, ULL had one more opportunity but Tamera Johnson's potential game-tying three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

Tech shot 43 percent (24-56) from the field despite hitting just 4-of-17 from the three-point line while ULL shot 39 percent (23-59) from the field. The Lady Techsters outrebounded ULL 39-34.

The Lady Techsters will open Conference USA action Jan. 1 at Marshall.
