HUNTINGTON, W.V. –
Raizel Guinto tied her career-high with 20 points, but Louisiana Tech struggled offensively for the second straight game and fell 61-57 to Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center Saturday afternoon.
Tech (6-2, 1-1 C-USA) shot only 29 percent from the field for the second consecutive outing, and unlike its 61-51 overtime win Friday night, couldn't overcome the poor offensive performance.
"I think we are getting great looks," said LA Tech head coach
Brooke Stoehr. "We have to have people step up and hit open shots. I thought Raizel hit some big shots, but we have to get more from our perimeter scorers. I think we are getting good looks. It's a matter of getting your hands and feet ready, delivering a scoring pass, and knocking down a shot with some confidence."
Marshall (2-2, 1-1 C-USA) capitalized on Tech's struggles from the field, building a 33-20 halftime lead as the Thundering Herd hit 48 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes.
"I was disappointed," said Stoehr. "I thought our defense in the first half was not what it needed to be. I think that gave Marshall confidence. I am proud of our kids for fighting back and us a chance to win the game. We were down 17 and we came back and got to within a possession a couple of times late. We just didn't knock down the shots that would have given us the lead or tied the game. I thought we let our shots not falling in the first half affect our defensive energy and intensity on that end of the floor."
Marshall took a 46-29 lead with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter before the Lady Techsters responded. Guinto, who was 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from the three-point line, connected on back-to-back three-pointers to close the deficit to 48-37 at the end of the third quarter.
LA Tech continued to close the gap in the fourth quarter, and got to within 55-54 with just over a minute to play. Tech had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead but never managed to connect on the shot as Marshall converted late free throws to pull out the win.
Keiunna Walker added 12 points and
Anna Larr Roberson chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Amber Dixon recorded her third straight game of double digit rebounds, pulling down a career-high 12 while adding six points.
"Amber only took four shots, and I think she is being really unselfish," said Stoehr. "She did grab 12 boards. She wasn't herself defensively in the first half, but she got locked in in the second half and got going. I was proud of the way she responded, but we have to have everyone step up.
"We have to have more from everybody. We shot 29 percent for the second game in a row and we need to be above 40 percent. I thought our defensive energy wasn't what it needed to be to start the game and that is what was most disappointing."
Savannah Wheeler led Marshall with 16 points.
Tech hit just 8-of-29 three-pointers in the loss, but did outrebound Marshall 40-36, including 17 more offensive boards.
Tech returns to action this weekend in a home series against WKU. Friday's tip is set for 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
