RUSTON, La. – Former Louisiana Tech women's basketball star Monica Maxwell will be enshrined into Indiana's Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, April 30 as part of the 20
th Women's Induction Class.
Maxwell was announced by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors as part of this year class. The Class of 2022 includes: Gary Andrews, Krista Blunk, Charles Mair, Julie (Rotramel) Meeks, Kristin (Pritchett) Messmore, Christy Smith, Amy Vanderkolk, Stephanie White and Silver Medal Award winner Darlene Mathew.
"To be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is so special," said Maxwell. "With the rich and storied history of Indiana Basketball and the traditions us Hoosiers carry around the country, it's really surreal to be included into a group of players that are among the best to ever play this game in this state. I'm extremely humbled by this outstanding recognition."
Before arriving at Tech, Maxwell was a 1995 all-state, All-American and Naismith Award Finalist at East Chicago Central High School. She was a unanimous first team all-state selection after averaging 24.4 points per game as a senior. Maxwell was a member of teams that won four sectional titles, including a 22-1 team her senior year.
The East Chicago, Ind. native starred for the Lady Techsters as a player in the late 1990's, helping lead Louisiana Tech to eight Sun Belt League titles (4 regular season, 4 tournament), four NCAA tournament appearances, two NCAA Final Fours, one national championship game and an overall record of 123-13.
"During my time at Tech (95-99) I really grew into a more complete player," said Maxwell. "Coming in with a coveted freshmen class and being mentored by an outstanding senior class, really took my game to another level mentally, this was the irreplaceable difference in us having such a successful career at Tech."
Maxwell was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the year in 1996 and all-conference in 1997 and 1998 before being named the Sun Belt Tournament MVP as a senior. Maxwell graduated fourth all-time in LA Tech history in three-point field goals made and attempted, while scoring 1,410 points, currently 26
th on the all-time scoring list at Tech.
She also ranks amongst the leaders in LA Tech's NCAA Tournament history in games played (18, 1st), points scored (124, 8th), rebounds (131, 5
th), assists (48, 6
th) and steals (25, 6
th), while earning NCAA All-Regional honors as a senior.
Maxwell was a member of USA Basketball's 1997 Jones Cup Silver Medal team, before going on to play four seasons in the WNBA with the Washington Mystics and the Indiana Fever. She went on to serve as an assistant coach at Tulane University from 2005 to 2006 and at Cal State Northridge from 2006 to 2007. Maxwell has been a high school athletic administrator for the past 11 years and currently serves as the athletic director at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School.
