Goff, Hutchinson Lead @LATechSB to Win

BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana Tech used a six-run fourth inning to defeat Southern 7-2 Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field in Baton Rouge.

Tech (2-4) plated six runs on six hits, including a bases clearing double by Kara Goff, to break open a close game and pick up its second win of the young season.

Freshmen Lauren Menzina and Emma Hutchinson tag teamed the circle for Tech, allowing just two runs – one earned – on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts on the afternoon. Hutchinson (1-0) picked up the win in relief, working 4.0 innings and retiring all 12 batters that she faced.

Despite dropping two out of three games on the weekend, the LA Tech pitching staff allowed just four earned runs over the three-game span.

"I thought the pitchers did a good job of managing the games this weekend," said Tech head coach Bianca Duran. "We got ourselves out of some tough situations and made some good defensive plays. The pitchers commanded their pitches well."

On Sunday, Tech trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning. KB Briley singled, Tanjala Smith walked and Kylie Neel singled to load the bases with no outs. After Briley scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2, Caroline Easom walked to load the bases again.

One out later, Kara Goff hit a bases clearing double to centerfield to ignite the offensive onslaught. Goff had a big weekend at the plate with two home runs and five RBI while also making some great defensive plays. She also pitched four shutout innings of relief Saturday.

"Kara was huge for us offensively and defensively this weekend," said Duran. "She was making things happen at the plate. She came in yesterday to pitch and shut down North Alabama. Then she made some great defensive plays in the outfield. She was just huge for us all weekend."

Following Goff's double, Madie Green and Brooke Diaz both recorded RBI doubles as Tech sent 10 batters to the plate in its highest scoring frame of the season.

Southern never threatened over the final four innings as Hutchinson picked up her first win of the season in the circle.

Goff (2-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI), Briley (2-4, run), Green (1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Diaz (1-4, RBI), Smith (1-3, run), Neel (1-3, run), Bailey Wright (1-4), and Easom (run) led the way offensively for Tech.

The Lady Techsters will return to action Wednesday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Southeastern Louisiana. Tech will open Dr. Billy Bundrick Field this weekend when it hosts its home tournament with the first game set for Friday at 6 p.m. against Tarleton State.
