@LATechSB Falls to OU, State

RUSTON, La. – Although Louisiana Tech wasn't able to put a mark in the win column on Saturday, softball fans in north Louisiana did.

Dr. Billy Bundrick Field and the Lady Techsters hosted No. 1 ranked Oklahoma and Mississippi State in a round robin that saw a COVID19 sellout enjoy three games.

Mississippi State defeated LA Tech 2-0 and Oklahoma defeated the Lady Techsters 10-0 while the Sooners defeated the Starkville-based Bulldogs 9-0. OU improved to 30-0 on the year with the two wins.

"What a great day for softball in Ruston," said Tech interim head coach Bianca Duran. "This was a great opportunity for us to showcase our new facility, and both head coach had nothing but great things to say about our new home. I really appreciate our administration for going above and beyond to make this happen in a very short time. These games were scheduled 48 hours ago, and so many people on our end went out of their way to make sure this was a first class experience for all three teams and fan bases.

"We got some solid pitching in the circle. We just struggled to find our offense. Some of that was on us and some of that was facing some really quality arms for both teams. We made a few mistakes at times in the field, which you can't do against great teams. Our young team learned some valuable lessons today. I'm excited to see what we take from today as we move forward. I'm looking forward to hosting ULM Tuesday."

Game 1: Mississippi State 2, LA Tech 0

Mississippi State pitcher Annie Willis tossed a complete-game no-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory over the Lady Techsters in the first game of the day.

Willis (12-4) struck out 10 batters while only allowing two base runners in the contest, outdueling Lady Techster starter Audrey Pickett (4-8). Willis hit Amanda Gonzalez with a pitch with one out in the bottom of the second and then walked Zoe Hicks with two outs in the fifth for the only two base runners allowed.

Pickett was the tough-luck loser despite a solid effort in the circle. The senior surrendered just three hits in 7.0 innings of action while allowing two runs with four walks and three strikeouts.

MSU right fielder Carter Spexarth drove home the first run of the game with a two-out single up the middle and into centerfield in the top of the first inning. The scored remained 1-0 until hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to complete the scoring.

Game 2: Oklahoma 10, LA Tech 0

Oklahoma entered the game with 92 home runs as a team and ranked No. 1 in the nation in just about every offensive category conceivable.

Tech pitchers Bre Hernandez and Kara Goff held the Sooners (30-0) to just one longball, but Oklahoma plated six runs in the third and four more in the fifth to pick up the 10-0 run-rule win.

It marked OU's 22nd run-rule victory of the year and the 16th time that the Sooners scored 10 or more runs in a game this season.

Hernandez (6-6) kept OU off the scoreboard through the first two innings. However, four walks, two errors, a passed ball and four hits led to a six-run third inning by the Sooners. Hernandez allowed six runs – three earned – on three hits and six walks in 2.2 innings of action. The senior recorded three strikeouts, including a strikeout swinging of Sooner All-American Joceyln Alo, who entered the game batting .566 with 22 home runs and only three strikeouts in more than 100 plate appearances on the season.

Goff came on in relief and retired four of the first five batters she faced. OU finally found some success, plating four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work by Goff.

Tech's lone hit of the game was an infield single by Tanjala Smith against OU starter Nicole May (10-0). May worked 3.1 innings allowing the one hit while striking out seven.
