RUSTON – Louisiana Tech's
Leonie Schuknecht picked up her third award of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday as the junior was voted as the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Â
Schuknecht claimed two of the three C-USA Athlete of the Month honors during the fall season and has now earned the first Player of the Week award for the spring.
Â
After going 8-3 in singles during the fall tournaments with quality wins over Arkansas, Northern Arizona, Tulane, Mississippi State, and Louisville, the Germany native picked up right where she left off at the Hurricane Invite in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which kicked off the 2023 dual season.
Â
Schuknecht went a perfect 3-0 at the top position in singles at the round robin event. She first defeated Maria Oreshkina of Wyoming, winning nine of the last 11 games to take it in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Â
Her next matchup was the toughest, coming against Tulsa's Laia Conde Monfort who is the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was ranked as high as No. 91 in the country last season.
Â
After falling in the three previous meetings to Monfort, Schuknecht prevailed in the fourth matchup, winning in three sets by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. She then closed out the weekend with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win versus Jessica Aragon of Omaha.
Â
Schuknecht also went 2-1 at the top position in doubles with partner
Najah Dawson, winning 7-6 (6) against Wyoming and 6-2 versus Omaha.
Â
This is the first C-USA Player of the Week award for Schuknecht, becoming the fourth LA Tech player in program history to receive this honor (
Ilana Tetruashvili – 2022, Alexandra Starkova – 2016, Jazmin Britos – 2015).
Â
Schuknecht and LA Tech play their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Stephen F. Austin. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
