LA Tech has Winning Streak Snapped

TULSA, Okla. – Louisiana Tech could not pull out the close sets in singles on Sunday, falling 6-1 to Wichita State in a neutral site match at the Bernis Duke Tennis Center.

Five of the 12 singles sets went at least 12 games and two of the six courts split sets as LA Tech (6-2) lost to a Wichita State (5-2) team that was a day removed from nearly upsetting highly-touted Tulsa.

The Shockers got the scoring started by picking up the doubles point with victories on courts two and three with 6-2 wins on each line.

However, it was the Lady Techsters who got the first singles win of the day thanks to still undefeated Leonie Schuknecht.  After dropping the opening two games to Jessica Anzo, the junior won six of the next seven games to take the first set and then finished things off with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

In the process of tying the match up at 1-1, Schuknecht improved to a perfect 7-0 in dual singles this spring (15-3 during the 2022-23 season).

The Shockers gained their lead back though after collecting back-to-back wins via straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions.  With the Lady Techsters needing the remaining three courts to win, almost all of the close sets went the way of WSU.

Both Najah Dawson (6-2, 5-7, 0-1) and Ana Rodrigues (7-5, 6-7, 0-1) lost in third-set superbreakers after winning the first set of their respective matches on courts three and six, respectively.  And Ilana Tetruashvili dropped her match in straight sets at No. 5 with one of those sets coming in a tiebreaker.

UP NEXT
