STARKVILLE, Miss. | Louisiana Tech men's and women's Track & Field teams competed Friday and Saturday at the Maroon and White Invite in Starkville, Miss. earning three silver medal finishes from
Jamie Sancho (200m),
Mateo Smith (long jump), and
Shania Parkinson (shot put), and posted 20 PRs as a team.
DAY ONE
Sancho ran the best race of his career in the men's 200m to take silver with a 20.64, just 0.02 from a program top-10 run. The Madrid, Spain freshman broke the 21-second mark for the first time last week at LSU with a previous PR of 20.98 to make it back-to-back weeks with a personal best.
Teammates
Marshall Ellis and
Devin Walton also posted PRs in the event, with Marshall grabbing a top-10 finish with a 21.20. Walton tied his previous personal best from the Clyde Hart Classic in March with a run of 21.59
.
On the women's side,
Nike Praetzel earned her second PR in as many weeks in the 200m running a 25.60, besting her 25.62 at LSU last weekend.
In the Friday distance races, Jacquelin Laberteaux posted a 5000m time of 19:49.04 to give her PR for the third straight meet, including second in the event.
In the field, Smith earned his fifth podium finish of the 2023 season in the men's long jump, taking second place, posting a 7.36m (24' 1.75''). On the women's side,
Jiana Stewartburgess registered a PR with a leap of 5.41m (17' 9'').
Pleasant Harris made the final nine and finished eighth, posting a 5.70m (18' 8.5'').
Elizabeth Sebera regsitered two top-five finishes with a personal best of 42.89m (140' 9'') in the women's discus, taking fifth, and tied her PR in the women's hammer throw (51.65m, 169' 5''), earning fourth.
DAY TWO
Saturday started in the shot put pit with a Techster and Bulldog reaching the podium.
Shania Parkinson took silver with a throw of 13.60 (44' 7.5''), and
Tim Fitzgerald earned bronze, measuring 15.99m (52' 5.5'').
Natalie Moten and
Johnie Jean-Jacques also made their respective shot put final nines. Moten earned a new PR on her next-to-last throw, posting a 12.50m (41' 0'') to finish seventh, and Jean-Jacques grabbed a fourth-place finish by throwing 15.80m (51' 10'').
Tyler O'con improved his javelin mark for the fourth week in a row throwing a 61.26m (201' 00'') on his first throw of the day, making it the best throw of his career. O'con finished sixth in the meet.
On the track,
Kayla Watson and Praetzel added PRs in the women's 100m H, taking third and seventh, respectively. Praetzel also has PR in the 100m H in back-to-back weeks.
Urijah Williams ran his personal best in the men's 110m H with a 14.73, taking sixth.
In the men's straight-away 100m, LA Tech posted four PRs, including
Gerard Sapena (10.54) and
Marshall Ellis (10.54), who finished sixth and ninth, respectively.
Mateo Smith finished just outside the top 10 running a personal best of 10.72, and
Javion Canna also registered his best for the second week in a row with an 11.42.
Chanel Honeywell,
Micah Pernetter, and
Tibet Sancak each ran the best lap of their collegiate careers in the 400m. Honeywell has shaved off over three seconds to her 400m time since the Indoor season in Jan. with a time of 57.53, good for fifth place, while Pernetter and Sancak posted a 51.22 and 52.55, respectively.
