Lady Techsters’ Third Quarter Rally Falls Short in Loss to ULM

MONROE, La. - Louisiana Tech battled back from a double-digit deficit but could not complete the comeback, falling 70-62 to ULM Friday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Lady Techsters took an early lead behind an Averi Aaron three-pointer on the first Louisiana Tech possession. The Warhawks would tie the game at 5 apeice, led by a J'Mani Ingram basket and free throw. The two teams would trade back and forth throughout the quarter, having six lead changes. ULM's bench would ultimately prove to be the difference, outscoring the Lady Techsters 12 to three and giving the Warhawks the lead to close the quarter 24-18.

ULM controlled the second quarter with a 9–0 run midway through the frame, building its largest lead of the half at nine. Louisiana Tech struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting just 26.7 percent in the period and committing five turnovers. The Warhawks capitalized inside, outscoring Tech 10–2 in the paint during the quarter. Alexia Weaver led the scoring for the Lady Techsters, notching eight points with two triples in the quarter.

The Lady Techsters fought back in the third, outscoring ULM 20–13 and shooting 53.8 percent from the field. Louisiana Tech scored 12 second chance points behind 10 offensive rebounds, led by Jordan Marshall's four. Joy Madison-Key's pair of free throws capped an 8–0 run that pulled LA Tech even heading into the final minutes of the frame. Paris Bradley would hit a corner three with 54 seconds left, giving Louisiana Tech its first lead since the first quarter. The Warhawks would close the quarter with a Kamille Brown layup, reclaiming the lead 50-49.

Despite the third quarter surge, ULM answered in the fourth with timely shooting and an 8–0 spurt to put the game out of reach. Louisiana Tech shot 38.5 percent in the final period and hit two threes, but turnovers and foul trouble proved costly down the stretch. The Warhawks dominated points off turnovers 9–0 in the quarter and sealed the win at the free-throw line, leading as much as 13 in the quarter. ULM outscored the Lady Techsters in points from turnovers, in the paint, from the bench, and in fast breaks. The Warhawks led for 34:19 of game time.

Marshall finished with 12 points and seven boards while Bradley added 10 points and four assists. Weaver led all Tech scorers with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including three triples, tying a career high. Marshall and Madison-Key would tie with a game high seven rebounds, setting the second game in a row where both share the title.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Brooke Stoehr
We need to compete more, [ULM] had a fire about them and we did not match that. We knew it was going to be a chaotic, physical game, and we would have to play poised. I thought we got some great looks early in the game and had some good opportunities, but we just could not convert. Credit to their defense, it changed a lot and we let it bother us. We have to be tougher on the defensive end. We will not win until we start to commit to the defensive end of the floor. It is a privilege to play this game and wear that uniform. Our level of intensity, desire, grit, and toughness is not where it needs to be. We will find the ones who want to commit to doing the simple things to compete the right way. This is not who we want to be, but right now it is who we are, and we will correct that.
