Lady Techsters Dominate Non-Conference Closer

Louisiana Tech defeated their second Conway, Arkansas team of the week, dominating the Lady Mustangs 97-24 to close non-conference play.

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech defeated their second Conway, Arkansas team of the week, dominating the Lady Mustangs 97-24 to close non-conference play.

The Lady Techsters wasted no time getting points on the board, scoring the first 14 of the game. Alexia Weaver galvanized the run, scoring a game high 10 points and dishing three assists en route to a 25-point first quarter. Louisiana Tech would take a 25-13 point lead into the second, scoring 14 points in the paint and 13 off of turnovers.

The second quarter was dominant for the Lady Techsters, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 28-2. The frame was opened on a 17-2 LA Tech run with eight different scorers for Louisiana Tech pitching in. The Lady Mustangs would not score for the final eight minutes of the quarter, the longest drought of the season for the Lady Techsters defense. Paris Bradley fortified the paint, grabbing a game high six rebounds in the half. Three Lady Techsters scored in double figures in the first half (Marshall, Weaver, Morris).

The scoring drought continued for the Lady Mustangs in the third quarter, going the full 10 minutes without adding another point. Louisiana Tech reinforced their lead, adding 22 points in the frame. Kaleigh Thompson led the way, scoring six points and grabbing four boards. It marked the first time this season that the Lady Techsters prevented a team from scoring in a quarter.

Louisiana Tech used the fourth quarter to protect the lead, scoring 22 more points with eight different players. A Central Baptist jump shot would finally end the 20 minute drought, ending the game with 24 points. Paris Bradley grabbed her 10th rebound in the fourth, matching a career high securing the first double-double of her career.

Five Lady Techsters scored in double-figures, led by Paris Bradley and Kaleigh Thompson's 14 apiece. Jianna Morris drilled a triple in the first quarter, extending her streak to 17 straight games with a three-pointer.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Brooke Stoehr
It was a great game going into the break and we will have a few days to recharge before conference play. We were able to get everybody minutes and everybody scored. I am not completely pleased with our defensive effort and intensity in that first quarter, but we really turned that up in the final three quarters. Getting into position and slowing them in transition helped us get into good spots defensively. Communication is something that we will continue to stress in practice because it helps all aspects of the game. The recipe to win on the road is to defend, rebound, and take care of the basketball. Our free throw shooting has been a mentality shift, knowing that we can be aggressive in the paint. This group has embraced that physical and attacking philosophy and it has helped us take advantage of the free throw line.

On preparing for conference play
We have to continue to work defensively. Positioning, communication, rebounding, all are important to win in conference. Making sure that during stoppages everyone knows which defense we are in and that all five on the court know. Our priority is stopping the ball and forcing a contested shot, you have to make them work hard for good shots. We have to cut down on the offensive rebounds we allow. Just continue to work on playing through the paint and getting good ball movement, but it all starts with our defense and rebounding.
