Bulldogs in Ninth at Louisiana Classics

LA Tech shot 300-287=587 (+11) in the first two rounds of the event

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Tech golf team got better as the day went on at the Oakbourne Country Club as the Bulldogs finished 36 holes in ninth at the 40th annual Louisiana Classics on Monday.

LA Tech got off to a rocky start in the morning, shooting 300 (+12) in round one which put the team in a tie for 11th.  However, three Bulldogs shot at or under par in round two to help climb two spots on the leaderboard after shooting 287 (-1).

The shotgun start got underway at 8 a.m. with LA Tech starting on holes 13-16.  It was a struggle to find birdies as the six Bulldogs combined to make just 12.

Freddie Surgey would have the top score for the team through 18 holes, shooting 73 (+1).  Niilo Maki-Petaja and Morton Bailey would both shoot 75 (+3) while Oskari Schuvalow carded a 77 (+5).

Even though LA Tech managed a combined 14 birdies and one eagle in round two, the team was able to avoid bogeys on the scorecards.  Maki-Petaja had two bogeys coupled with three birdies to shoot 71 (-1), his 16th round at or under par this season.

Bailey matched Maki-Petaja with a 71 (-1) of his own, going birdie-birdie on No. 10 and No. 11.  Both Bulldogs, along with Surgey who matched his first-round score of 73 (+1), are all tied for 28th on the player leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Schuvalow had a stretch of four birdies in seven holes in route to shooting Even (72).

Seventh-ranked LSU is in the lead after 36 holes, finishing the day at 15 under par.  The Tigers have a three-stroke lead over 24th-ranked Texas A&M.
