HUNTSVILLE, Texas. – Louisiana Tech won its 30
th game of the season after splitting its double header with Sam Houston on Saturday afternoon at Bearkat Softball Stadium. The Bulldogs move to 30-22 (15-11 CUSA) after dropping game one 3-1 and winning game two 5-4 (8 innings).
Alexis Gilio collected three hits across the two games as she recorded two base knocks in game one.
Elena Heng had two hits in game two, while
Addison Snyder had a hit in both games.
Reagan Marchant and
Alannah Rogers drove in two runs apiece. Marchant collected two RBI in game two as she tied the program single season home run record with her 17
th home run of the season.
Allie Floyd moved to 21-12 on the season after taking the loss in game one and earning the victory in game two.
Laney Johnson earned the start in game two and gave the Bulldogs five innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits. Floyd allowed three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in game one. She tossed 3.0 innings in relief in game two and sat down all nine batters she faced, using three strikeouts, three fly outs, and three ground outs.
GAME ONE – SHSU 3, LA Tech 1
A pitchers dual through four innings, both teams got on the board in the fifth as the Bulldogs played small ball to score their lone run of the game, while the Bearkats used the long ball.
After recording just one hit through four innings, LA Tech struck first in the top of the fifth as
Claire Raley drew a five-pitch walk, followed by a sac bunt from Snyder to advance her to second. Rogers doubled to left center to score Raley, making it 1-0 LA Tech.
The Bearkats responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame as they scored three runs on four hits. After a groundout to start the half inning, SHSU recorded four straight hits. Back-to-back singles put two on base for Bella Perez who blasted a three-run home run to put SHSU on top 3-1.
SHSU outhit LA Tech 10-4 in the loss.
GAME TWO – LA Tech 5, SHSU 4 (8 Innings)
Game two proved to be a different story for the Bulldogs as they outhit the Bearkats 9-8 in the extra innings affair. The contest saw two lead changes and one tie.
LA Tech got the scoring started in the top of the first as Marchant hit a two-run home run to score Gilio. Gilio led off the game with a single, followed by a steal and a throwing error by the catcher, allowing her to reach third base. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with three consecutive walks, but a fly out would end the scoring threat.
The Bearkats added three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 advantage. SHSU used a two-run home run and double that scored one to plate their three runs.
The Bulldogs jumped back in front in the top of the fifth as they added two runs on two hits to take a 4-3 lead. Hammoude singled to right to start the frame and advanced 60 feet to second on a Marchant walk.
Gracie Flores pinch ran for Marchant and moved into scoring position on a Raley sac bunt, while Hammoude took third. Snyder singled to center to score Hammoude, while Rogers was able to score Flores on a sac fly to center, making it 4-3 LA Tech.
SHSU used back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four apiece.
After a scoreless seventh, the game went into extra innings, marking the third extra innings contest for LA Tech this season. The free softball would not last long as the Bulldogs plated one in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead.
Allie Furr singled to short, followed by a
KB Briley single to short, and a bunt single from Heng. Gilio was able to plate the winning run on a sac fly to left that scored Furr.
Floyd used a fly out, a foul out, and a strikeout to sit the Bearkats down in order in the bottom of the frame.
