The fourth-year quarterback was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, as well as receiving honors for the Davey O’Brien Great 8 and the Manning Award Stars of the Week.
RUSTON – It was a busy day promoting Blake Baker on Monday afternoon, as he received three separate honors for his high-level performance in Saturday's win over in-state rival UL-Lafayette. The Cypress, Texas native was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, as well as being listed to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 and the Manning Award Stars of the Week List for Week 6.
The fourth-year quarterback passed for 300+ yards for just the second time in his career, as well as his second game with multiple touchdown passes. He matched his career high with three scores through the air, which was previously set in the season opener on September 5 vs. Northwestern State, along with adding one on the ground that was crucial in Louisiana Tech's fourth-quarter comeback over the Ragin' Cajuns.
Now with multiple 300-yard games through the air under his belt, Baker is the 22nd quarterback to do so at LA Tech since 1968.
It is the second time this season a Bulldog has received an SBC weekly honor, and the first time a LA Tech quarterback has been named to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 and Manning Stars of the Week in the same week since Trey Kukuk's Week 14 performance at Missouri State in 2025.
Along with Baker, the remaining list of the Great 8 list for Week 6 are Oregon State's Braden Atkinson, BYU's Bear Bachmeier, Navy's Jackson Gutierrez, Gio Lopez of Wake Forest, South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, Georgia's Gunner Stockton and Houston's Connor Weigman.
The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this year. The National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981.
Over its time, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.4 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
Baker, Atkinson, Bachmeier, Lopez and Sellers were among the selections to both the Davey O'Brien Great 8 and Manning Award Stars of the Week. Joining that group for the Manning selections are Cal's Jackson Brousseau, Jeremy Hecklinski of Iowa and North Texas' Tayven Jackson.
Baker and the Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, October 17 for the Radiance Technologies I-20 Showdown with ULM in Monroe, marking the first meeting with the Warhawks since 2000. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
