Johnson Wins Gold in Men's Long Jump

Cobe Johnson leaps 7.85m on his final attempt to win gold Thursday afternoon in the CUSA Outdoor Championships, while 9 Bulldogs advance to the finals on Saturday.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Cobe Johnson leaps 7.85m on his final attempt to win gold Thursday afternoon in Tennessee, while 9 Bulldogs advance to the finals on Saturday.
 
Johnson soared on his last attempt 7.85m, narrowly edging out Liberty's Markus White by 0.02m for first place. Johnson's leap is the 12th longest jump by a DI athlete this outdoor season and set a new career best. It is the ninth longest jump in Bulldog history.
 
Oscar Smith ran the second fastest time in the 110m hurdles with a 14.00 sprint, advancing him to the final round on Saturday.
 
Rickey Williams III qualified for the 400m finals with a 47.54 mark, the seventh fastest time in the field.
 
The Bulldogs shined in the women's 400m with three advancing to the finals. Jamara Patterson finished a near three full seconds better than second place in her heat with a blazing 52.56, the fastest of the entire field. Tyhra Charles also won her heat with a 53.94 time, the third fastest of all athletes. Nia Wiley also qualified with a 55.24, the sixth fastest.
 
The third heat of the men's 100m propelled three Bulldogs into the finals on Saturday. Lukundo Kapambalala ran a 10.27 dash, a new personal best and the second fastest of the field. Kapambalala's time is the 60th fastest in DI this season. Abdulraof Rashid and Carl Murray IV both finished with a 10.42 time, finishing 7th and 8th in the event to advance.
 
Tyrica Sterrett rounded out the Bulldogs with 11.69 100m dash, winning her heat and having the third fastest time of the field.
 
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow in the women's high jump, both 200m and both 800m.
