Louisiana Tech opens its Sun Belt era by welcoming the Bulldog family back to Ruston
RUSTON | This week, hundreds of freshmen will roll their belongings into their new home during Dog Hauls, Louisiana Tech's annual student move-in tradition — and by Saturday night, many of them will be standing in Origin Bank Field at Joe Aillet Stadium for the first time, hearing "Bark Louder" for the first time, becoming a Blue Blood for the first time.
For returning students, it's the sound they've been waiting all summer to hear again. For alumni scattered across the state and beyond, some of them bringing their own children to a Tech game for the first time, it's a chance to relive the same memory they made years ago, now through someone else's eyes. And for the first responders who serve Lincoln Parish, Ruston, and Louisiana Tech's campus every day of the year, it's a chance for a program they support all season to say thank you.
Different reasons. Same answer. We come home.
Louisiana Tech opens the 2026 season — and its first as a member of the Sun Belt Conference — against Northwestern State on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Origin Bank Field at Joe Aillet Stadium. It's the 81st all-time meeting in a series Louisiana Tech leads 55-20-5, and the 20th played in Ruston.
Few programs on Louisiana Tech's schedule have stood across the line as long as Northwestern State has, and few have stood as close — Ruston and Natchitoches sit just 75 miles apart, the kind of regional proximity that fueled decades of rivalry long before the Sun Belt began renewing the same kind of neighborhood matchups across the conference today.
The two schools first met in 1907, and for more than four decades the rivalry had its own home entirely: the State Fair Game rivalry, played annually at Independence Stadium in Shreveport from 1946 to 1987. Families built weekends around it. Generations of Bulldogs and Demons grew up on it.

Part of that tradition was The Court — each school selected a State Fair Court of campus favorites and beauty queens, presented on the field together during the halftime show. This week, Louisiana Tech will recognize several former State Fair Court members as part of the Hometown Heroes' homecoming feel, a nod to a piece of the rivalry's history that hasn't been part of the game in decades.
The State Fair Game rivalry paused as Louisiana Tech climbed to the Division I-A level, a jump that would help pave the way for the Spirit of '88 seasons that followed. The series went dormant for years at a time after that, resuming briefly in 1994 before a 20-year gap that wasn't bridged again until 2014.
The State Fair Game rivalry conjures up memories like the 1968 meeting in Shreveport, still remembered as one of the most dramatic in the series' history. Northwestern State led by four points with under 20 seconds to play, and Louisiana Tech pinned deep in its own territory. Tech quarterback Terry Bradshaw dropped back, found flanker Ken Liberto (pictured below) streaking down the sideline, and connected on an 82-yard touchdown that allowed the 'Dogs to escape with a 42-39 win — and, as it's remembered for many around Ruston, a turning point for the program itself.
Hometown Heroes
Game One also belongs to the people who serve Lincoln Parish, Ruston, and Louisiana Tech every day of the year. Each year, the Hometown Heroes recognition honors the police, fire, and medical providers who keep campus and community safe on game day and every day in between. It's a small way of returning the favor to the people who rarely get asked to stand and be seen. This year, the
Bulldogs will shine a deserving spotlight on Louisiana Tech's own Police Department.
Add in High School Band Day, filling the stands with the next generation of Bulldog fans before they've even applied, and the opener not only shines on who is on the schedule, but also who's in the building.
A New Chapter, A Familiar Feeling
The 2026 season marks Louisiana Tech's first in the Sun Belt Conference — new opponents, new rivalries, a new chapter in the program's history. But the opener reminds us that some things don't change.
The Bulldog family still gathers the same way it always has: you don your red and blue, tailgates fill the lots, the Kennel comes alive, and Joe Aillet Stadium fills with students experiencing it for the first time, standing next to alumni who remember exactly how that felt.
