Louisiana Tech track and field coach Gary Stanley announced today that former Lady Techster Nadia Alexander-Pompey will return to her alma mater as the associate head coach over the throws.
Alexander-Pompey comes to Ruston after spending the past two years as the head coach at Florida A&M University.
“I am thrilled to bring back one of Louisiana Tech’s greatest throwers as our throws coach,” said Stanley. “Nadia has experience as a D1 head coach and is a proud Louisiana Tech graduate. She still holds the indoor and outdoor school record in the shot put. She was an extremely hard worker and ferocious competitor. I know she will bring those same qualities in as a coach at Tech.”
Alexander-Pompey lettered at Louisiana Tech from 2005 through 2009 where she helped lead the program to four Western Athletic Conference indoor titles and five Western Athletic Conference outdoor titles during her time in Ruston.
She was a three-time all-conference honoree in the shot put in indoor track and field (2006, 2007, 2008) and a two-time all-conference honoree in the shot put in outdoor track and field (2008, 2009). She was the WAC Indoor Champion in the shot put in 2009 with a throw of 52-10.25 and the Outdoor Champion in 2008 (54-6.75) and 2009 (54-0.5).
Alexander-Pompey still holds the top six marks in the shot put in outdoor, including the school record throw of 54-8.75 in Philadelphia in April of 2009 at the Penn Relays where she won the event. She still holds the top two marks in the shot put in indoor competition, including the school record throw of 53-7.5 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 2008.
“Once I started my coaching career, I always dreamed of the opportunity to return home to my alma mater Louisiana Tech University and join the staff,” said Alexander-Pompey. “It took something incredibly special for me to leave Florida A&M, but I know in my heart this is the right place and the right time.
“As a former Lady Techster, I know where our potential as a program can rise to amongst the NCAA track and field teams. I thank Coach Stanley and embrace the opportunity to join his staff and continue to build onto that history on both a conference and national level.”
Alexander-Pompey brings a wealth of coaching experience to Ruston, having served stints at FAMU (head coach, 2019-2021), Mississippi Valley State (head coach, 2018-19), Shaw University (head coach, 2016-18), Lincoln University (assistant coach, 2013-16) and Virginia State University (assistant coach, 2011-13).
In her inaugural season at MVSU, Alexander-Pompey had five student-athletes competing at the NCAA East Prelims in Jacksonville, Fla. which is the most ever in school history. In addition to achieving success during competition, MVSU excelled in academics. The women’s outdoor track & field team boasted a team GPA of 3.44 and earned a spot on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team along with two athletes who received individual All-Academic honors.
During the 2017-18 season at Shaw, the individual winner of the men’s cross country conference championships was her freshman runner while the women’s cross country team finished with an all-conference performer. In the spring, the women’s outdoor team elevated to a new level breaking nine school records with four student-athletes provisionally qualifying for the Division II NCAA Championships.
In Alexander-Pompey's first year at Shaw, the women's outdoor track and field team had a breakthrough season. The Bears had a women’s Division II NCAA Outdoor Championship participant, which was last achieved in 2002. Her student-athlete earned second-team All-American honors as well as Academic All-American accolades. In addition, two student-athletes were named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team.
Before arriving at Shaw, Alexander-Pompey spent three years at The Lincoln University (Pa.) as an assistant coach for the cross country/track and field programs overseeing the Lions’ field events. During her tenure at Lincoln, she coached four Division II NCAA National qualifiers (shot-put, discus, & long jump), five conference champions (shot-put & discus) and one Field MVP honoree of the conference outdoor championships.
Previously, Alexander-Pompey served on the Virginia State University coaching staff from 2011-2013. During her tenure at VSU, she coached 29 All-CIAA performances including two CIAA Champions and 12 top-three performers.
A 2009 graduate of Louisiana Tech University, Alexander-Pompey earned a bachelor's degree in general studies with a concentration in social sciences. Additionally, she received her master’s degree in sports management from Virginia State in 2012.
