Steven Champlin enters his third season with Louisiana Tech’s men’s and women’s track and field programs. Champlin was hired on Nov. 1, 2019, after briefly serving as a volunteer coach at Northern Arizona University. Champlin works primarily with the team’s sprinters, hurdlers and relay runners.

During the 2021 outdoor season, Champlin helped coach Bulldog 110m-hurdler Ahmad Young to a spot in the NCAA East Regionals. Young placed 16th overall in the quarterfinals of the 110m hurdles and finished 11th in the prelims at the NCAA East Regionals. Young also placed fourth in the 110m hurdles at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships with a time of 14.13 seconds.

During the 2021 indoor season, Champlin saw Claudasha Watson place third in the 60-meter dash at the Conference USA Indoor Championships with a time of 7.59 seconds, helping her earn Third Team All-Conference USA honors. On the men’s side, 400-meter dash runner Seth Boullion logged a fifth-place time of 48.68 seconds at the Conference USA Indoor Championships.

In an indoor-only campaign in 2020, Champlin saw Bulldog and Lady Techster runners achieve top-eight finishes, including Nolan Walker’s sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, Makayla Edwards’ eighth-place finish in the 200 meters and Jada Branch’s eighth-place finish in the 400 meters at the Conference USA Championships. Ahmad Young, Xavier Bishop-Falu and Walker also finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

The former Texas Tech standout earned First Team All-American honors three times as a Red Raider, running in the 4x400-meter relay, 400-meter race, 200-meter run and the 100-meter run while at Texas Tech. Champlin notched 10 first-place finishes in Lubbock, setting personal bests in the 400 with a time of 45.01 and the 200 with a time of 20.89. Overall, Champlin earned 12 All-Big 12 honors and was the Big 12 Champion at the Texas Tech Indoors in 2018.

Champlin earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and athletic coaching from Texas Tech University in May 2018. He also earned a master’s degree in film and media studies from Arizona State University in August 2019.
