Louisiana Tech Athletics and Learfield announced that Sam Newcombe has been hired as the new play-by-play broadcaster for the Lady Techsters, serving as the radio voice for women’s basketball beginning with the 2025-26 season.
“Sam comes from a basketball-rich region of the country,” said Director of Broadcasting and Voice of the Bulldogs Kyle Schassburger. “He is a student of the game who is extremely well-prepared and hungry to provide the soundtrack of Lady Techsters basketball. Sam has seized the opportunity, understands its significance, and I expect will immerse himself accordingly while providing high-level play-by-play for the historic Lady Techster brand.”
Newcombe joins LA Tech with a strong background in sports broadcasting, bringing experience from the Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN), where he provided play-by-play coverage for high school football, basketball, baseball, and softball. He has also worked with the Big Ten Network+, calling Indiana University women’s basketball, baseball, softball, water polo, and volleyball from 2019 to 2022.
“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to join Louisiana Tech and Learfield as the play-by-play voice of the Lady Techsters,” said Newcombe. “Having the chance to call games for a program with such a proud tradition is really special, and I’m excited to bring energy and insight to each broadcast while continuing to grow as a broadcaster. I look forward to connecting with Tech fans and sharing the story of this team all season long.”
A graduate of Indiana University, Newcombe earned his degree in Sports Media with a minor in Sports Marketing & Management. While at IU, he worked extensively with WIUX Radio, serving as play-by-play voice for multiple sports while co-hosting football shows and podcasts. He also gained summer league experience with the Hamilton Joes of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League in 2021.
“We are excited to add Sam to the Louisiana Tech Family,” said LA Tech Women’s Basketball head coach Brooke Stoehr. “He has a passion for basketball and respects the history and tradition of the program. Sam will bring a detailed and meticulous approach to his preparation. We are excited to introduce Sam as the new Voice of the Lady Techsters!”
