Tech softball falls in Lafayette
Louisiana Tech (1-3) lost both ends of a double-header to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday by scores of 8-0 and 4-0.
"Lafayette is an extremely talented team," head coach Sarah Dawson said. "The second game showed our kids that we can compete with the better teams in the nation. We just couldn't put anything together, offensively, back-to-back."
In game one, the Lady Cajuns jumped on Tech early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior starter, Sabra Warner hit the first batter of the game and walked the next two before allowing a one-out grand slam to Danyele Gomez.
Warner couldn't get any offensive help as Tech failed to score in the game before losing in the bottom of the fifth inning due to softball's eight-run rule.
Warner (0-1) allowed eight runs in four innings while allowing five hits and six walks.
The Tech offense managed no hits and no walks as they were set down in order for five innings by Brooke Mitchell (1-0).
"(Mitchell) had a nice rise ball, we couldn't seem to get on top of it," Dawson said.
Tech did manage five hits in game two but couldn't push any across the plate before falling to the Lady Cajuns 4-0.
Freshman Kristin Rupp (0-2) picked up the loss allowing four runs and four walks over six innings while striking out four batters.
Offensively Tech was led by senior shortstop Jennifer LaRussa, who tallied two of the Techsters' five hits.
"Our defense played good today. The outfield was exceptional making a couple of diving plays and doubling a runner off second base," Dawson said. "When we get to the point where we play two good ends of a double-header we'll be where we need to be."
Tech returns to action this weekend when it travels to Monroe for the ULM Mardi Gras Classic.
