Softball takes two from Jackson State
Ruston - Tech (10-24) played two completely different games Tuesday night but still managed two victories as it bombed away in a game one 10-0 win and outlasted Jackson State (6-25) in game two's 1-0 pitcher's duel.
Senior starter Marla Pinkston (7-9) struck out two of the first three Jackson State hitters on her way to a perfect first inning.
The Lady Techster batters matched their pitcher's overpowering performance by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning to effectively end the game right after it started.
"Our hitters had to make adjustments as a team because they have been use to seeing pitchers who throw a lot harder," Tech head coach Sarah Dawson said. "I thought everybody took their time and made improvements the second time through the order."
Offensive heroes for the opener included Sabra Warner (two hits, two RBIs), Mary Cohn (two hits, one RBI) and Brittany Stanley (three hits, two runs, three stolen bases).
Pinkston pitched the first three innings of the contest allowing only one hit while striking out six batters. She walked no one and faced only one batter over the minimum in the victory.
Game two was a different story as Tech was quiet at the plate all game until the bottom of the seventh inning. In that frame Tech broke up opposing pitcher Valea Crowder's perfect game by notching two hits and the game's only run, all coming after one out.
"Their pitcher did a good job of staying ahead of our hitters," Dawson said. "In the seventh inning our kids concentrated and got what they wanted, that?s something that they have been doing all year."
Sophomore Amber Miles singled after the leadoff hitter failed to reach and later advanced to third base on a fielding error by Jackson State second baseman Courtney Young.
With one out and the bases loaded sophomore first baseman Ashley Aycock singled up the middle and drove in the winning run.
Sabra Warner started the game and pitched five scoreless innings while only allowing one hit. Pinkston pitched the final two innings and picked up the victory while striking out two hitters with no walks.
For the day Pinkston pitched eight innings allowing two hits and punching out eight batters while walking no one and picking up two victories. Warner's line on the day was seven innings pitched, one hit and no runs allowed.
"Marla did a good job of hitting her spots and working on some different pitches she wouldn't normally have tried," Dawson said. "Sabra kept us in game two by matching their pitcher's performance and throwing strikes."
Tech returns to action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader at Stephen F. Austin scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
