Tech softball sweeps San Jose State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Posted Apr 12, 2003 18:42:18 Tech softball sweeps San Jose State

Ruston - Tech (14-29, 4-2) softball used an offensive barrage and an extra inning single to win both ends of a doubleheader against WAC foe San Jose State (21-26, 3-5) Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-2 and 3-2(8).

The Lady Techsters were ahead 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning of game two before San Jose State's Megan Delgado tied the contest with a two-run home run.

However, Tech recovered and got the last out of the inning, which, in turn, set up their heroics in the bottom of the eighth inning.

With two outs and Mary Cohn at third base, sophomore left fielder Brittany Stanley shot a pitch down the right field line for the game winner.

"There is no doubt about it, Brittany has been real clutch lately," Tech Head coach Sarah Dawson said. "She's been taking advantage of RBI situations."

Dawson had faith in her team going into extra frames.

"I had stressed to the team how important getting out of here with two wins was," she said. "After the home run we were disappointed, but the team was ready to stay out there all day to do what it took to win."

Marla Pinkston picked up the win, her second of the day, in a relief effort. The senior pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Techsters.

Game one was much easier for Tech. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the bats would come alive and score seven unanswered runs for the 7-2 victory.

Stanley, Ashley Aycock and Alison White each had two RBIs in the day's opening game. For the doubleheader, Stanley collected three hits, four RBIs and one run scored.

Pinkston pitched a complete seven innings for game one's victory. Her line was an efficient four hits, two runs and four strikeouts.

"She has been pitching at this level for quite some time now," Dawson said. "We need her to perform like this if we are going to be competitive in conference play."

Providing a vital boost to this weekend's success was the play of number nine hitter Aimee Coleman. The freshman left fielder collected three hits, one RBI and two runs scored on the day.

"Aimee has done great job of prolonging our rallies and getting us back to the top of our lineup," Dawson said. "It helps to have someone in the nine whole who can create, plus she's coming through in RBI situations."

In WAC play Coleman is batting a robust .500 with eight hits and three runs scored. She has also not committed an error over that period of time.
