Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Posted Apr 19, 2003 20:47:51 Tech softball doubles down for Saturday sweep in Reno

Tech softball (16-31, 6-4) finished a hard fought weekend trip to Nevada with a Saturday sweep. The Lady Techsters' bats came to life in both victories as Tech won by the scores of 7-0 and 9-1 (five innings).

"It's really tough to win on the road," Tech head coach Sarah Dawson said. "It helped today to come out and score some runs early to take their crowd out of the game."

In game one, Tech broke an early scoreless tie when it scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Brittany Stanley and freshman Mary Cohn each scored on a two-RBI single by designated player Ashley Aycock. Bridget Boradnax would later drive in Amber Miles for the early 3-0 lead.

"Our three, four and five hitters were really clutch today," Dawson said. "Ashley (Aycock) did a good job all weekend long of coming up with big two-out hits. Bridget (Broadnox) and Casey (Reiff) each did a job of keeping things going today."

The pitching effort of Kristin Rupp and Marla Pinkston made the score last as the two combined on the mound for seven innings of two-hit, no run pitching.

Rupp (5-15) picked up the victory by pitching the first four innings while allowing only one hit with one strikeout.

For the game Miles collected three hits and two runs scored while shortstop Casey Reiff contributed two RBIs.

In game two, Tech's offense continued as the game was called after only five innings of play.

The Lady Techsters grabbed an early lead by scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Offensive heroes included Reiff (three runs scored, two RBIs) and Alison White (one run scored, three RBIs).

Pitching wise, Tech used the same strategy as in game one. Rupp pitched the first 1 and 2/3rds innings while Pinkston finished off the final 3 and 1/3rd innings.

The combo's line on the game was five innings pitched, one hit and one run. Pinkston got the victory to improve to 11-13 on the season.

"We knew we were going to throw the same pitchers as yesterday," Dawson said. "It just so happens that Marla and Kristin really compliment each other. Kristin threw real well today with a lot of movement, and Marla came in threw the ball hard."

Tech returns to action on Wednesday with single game at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
