Former Bulldog Star Brewer Dies in Accident
RUSTON - Former Louisiana Tech football star Larry Brewer, who became one of Terry Bradshaw's favorite targets during the late 60s, died Friday in an accident in Oahu, Hawaii.
Brewer drowned while swimming with his oldest son, Blake, in the Honolulu Beach area while on vacation. Service arrangements for Brewer are still pending.
The 54-year-old Brewer lettered for Tech from 1966 through 1969 and played an integral part in the Bulldogs road to the Grantland Rice Bowl in both 1968 and 1969. During his senior year at Tech, Brewer hauled in 30 passes for 357 yards and one touchdown; however, it was a play made during his junior campaign that most Bulldog fans still remember.
During the fourth quarter of the Grantland Rice Bowl against Akron, Bradshaw eluded numerous would-be tacklers to throw a six-yard scoring strike to Brewer to help lead the Bulldogs to a 33-13 win.
In his final two years with Tech, Brewer helped the Bulldogs record a 17-4 mark while ranking among the top college division teams in the nation. The former Minden High School graduate earned his undergraduate degree from Tech and later a master's degree from Louisiana-Monroe.
According to reports filed in Honolulu this past weekend, Brewer was snorkeling in an area known as Witches Brew with his son. Lifeguards brought him out of the water, performed CPR on him before transferring him to The Queen's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Brewer is survived by his wife, Toni Milam; two sons, Blake and Marcus; one daughter, Natalie, all of Sand Springs, Okla.; one brother, Gary and his wife Pam and their three children of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and his parents, Clint and Helen Brewer of Minden.
