Bulldogs Add Three To Men's Hoops Program
Louisiana Tech added talent in all areas of the game Wednesday as the men's basketball program signed three new Bulldogs to National Letters of Intent on the first day of the fall signing period.
Tech coach Keith Richard inked a pair of guards and a forward to add to his 2005-06 squad while adding depth to the team's scoring, rebounding and defense.
The Bulldogs added junior college transfer guard Trey McDowell (6-3, 180) of San Jacinto (TX) Junior College and a pair of incoming freshmen, guard Drew Washington (6-2, 170) of Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas and forward Adrian Rogers (6-7, 215) of Mayde Creek High School in Houston, Texas.
McDowell led San Jacinto to a 28-4 record, an East Texas Junior College Conference title and an appearance in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament last season, averaging 12.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He also led NJCAA Region XIV in 3-point field goal percentage (48.2 percent) and was sixth in total field goal percentage (55.2 percent) while picking up honorable mention All-NJCAA Region XIV accolades.
He was standout guard at Westbrook High School in Beaumont, Texas, where he was named All-District and All-State as a senior after averaging 24 points per contest.
This season McDowell has helped San Jacinto to a 4-0 start, averaging 25.5 points per game in the process.
Washington averaged 18.3 points, 5.2 assists and 2.9 steals per game last season as a junior and was named first-team District 24-5A. Washington is rated as the 35th best recruit in Texas by TexasHoops.com.
"I really liked the coaches at Louisiana Tech," Washington said. "Everyone made me feel comfortable when I visited. I liked the other players and the coaches made me feel good, so it felt like the place I wanted to be."
Washington said he thinks his speed and versatility will make him valuable for the Bulldogs.
"I can add quickness to a lot of speed they already have," Washington said. "I can play either guard spot and I think I'm a pretty good defender. I'm willing to do whatever it takes."
Rogers helped Mayde Creek High School to a 25-9 mark last season as a junior, averaging 10.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest. He also hit on 57 percent of his shots from the floor and 72 percent from the free-throw line.
"I thought Louisiana Tech had the whole package I was looking for," Rogers said. "It has a great basketball program and it's a good school with good academics. They play in the (Western Athletic Conference) and I love the teams they play. It's going to be great to get a chance to play for Louisiana Tech and that kind of program."
Rogers said that he plans on bringing his mental game as well as his physical game to the Bulldogs.
"I think it's my hard work ethic that will end up catching people's attention," Rogers said. "I'm always trying to get better and I think I have the talent and the will to help the program keep moving forward."
