Poor Free Throw Performance Downs 'Dogs

The charity stripe was anything but giving to Louisiana Tech Sunday as the Bulldogs battled Texas-San Antonio.

An ice-cold performance at the free throw line was too much to overcome as UTSA took a 79-71 win over the Bulldogs at the UTSA Convocation Center.

Louisiana Tech fell to 3-4 with the loss while the Roadrunners are now 4-2. The Bulldogs had previously defeated UTSA 73-64 on Dec. 4 in Ruston, La.

The Bulldogs made a final-minute push as Eric Woods and Jason Bray both connected on 3-pointers to cut the Roadrunners lead to 76-71 with 37.2 seconds remaining.

Tech hit on only 26.9 percent of its free throw attempts in the contest while UTSA made good on 65.6 percent (21-of-32) of its tries from the line. The showing at the free throw line was the worst of the season for the Bulldogs.

?I?ve never seen anything like that,? Tech coach Keith Richard said. ?I don?t know what to say, and that?s what I told the team. You can?t win a game shooting like that at the line. If we make more free throws, it?s a tight game. But we didn?t make them.?

Younger brother Paul Millsap won round two in the ?Battle of the Brothers Millsap? as the sophomore Tech forward poured in 30 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

It was the second 30-point performance of the season for Paul Millsap, who scored a career-high 31 points earlier this season at Auburn.

Older brother and UTSA senior forward John Millsap totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Roadrunners, who were led by Andre Owens? 20 points.

Tech had two other players score in double figures as senior guards Corey Dean and Donell Allick hit for 10 points each.

Daevon Haskins tied his career high with nine assists for the Bulldogs. Haskins also had nine dishes earlier this season at Auburn.

UTSA outrebounded the Bulldogs 45-37, marking only the second time Tech has been beaten on the boards this season. The Roadrunners also outrebounded the Bulldogs 48-31 in their Dec. 4 meeting.

The Roadrunners maintained control throughout the opening 20 minutes, taking a 38-25 lead at intermission on a long 3-pointer from David President, who launched the ball at the buzzer right after crossing the midcourt line.

UTSA hit on 41.9 percent (13-31) of its first-half attempts while holding the Bulldogs to a 32.4 (11-34) shooting percentage. Much of UTSA's first-half work was done at the free throw line, where the Roadrunners went 9-of-11 before intermission compared to Tech's 1-of-5 effort from the line.

Things stayed the same for much of the second-half, with UTSA finishing with a 41.9 shooting percentage (27-of-58) while Tech hit on 44.6 percent (29-of-65) of its shots. The main difference being that the Bulldogs went 1-of-5 at the free throw line in the first half and 6-of-21 after intermission.

?We just didn?t score points the way we needed to,? Richard said. ?It drains your team to keep running down the court like that after missing shots and gets to be mentally tough.?

Tech returns to action next Saturday as the Bulldogs play host to McNeese State in a 3 p.m. contest at the Thomas Assembly Center.
