Bulldogs To Battle Jackson State

Louisiana Tech looks to move to .500 Tuesday as the Bulldogs take to the road to face Jackson State in a 7 p.m. contest at the Williams Athletics Assembly Center in Jackson, Miss.

The Bulldogs stand at 2-3 while Jackson State is 1-6.

Both teams are coming off home wins after Tech took a 73-64 decision over Texas-San Antonio in which senior guard Corey Dean spearheaded the Bulldogs' offensive attack with 17 points and Jackson State is coming off a 64-51 win over Jacksonville State.

Sophomore forward Paul Millsap leads the Bulldogs with 20.6 points and 13.4 rebounds per game while Dean is chipping in with 12.2 points per contest.

Senior guard Donell Allick is the only other Bulldog scoring in double figures with 10.8 ppg.

"Jackson State is no stranger to us and we know we're in for a tough game," Tech coach Keith Richard said. "We just hope to keep improving on both offense and defense, but especially offensively, where we're struggled a little."

Tech is averaging 65.2 points per game and is giving up 71.9 ppg. Jackson State enters the contest averaging 58.1 ppg and giving up 75.1 ppg.

Louisiana Tech holds a 6-2 series advantage over Jackson State, including a 77-63 win last season in Ruston.

That game itself might not have been pretty, but Louisiana Tech's 200th win in the Thomas Assembly Center was a thing of beauty for the Bulldogs.

Louisiana Tech used a second-half surge to power past Jackson State in that one after struggling in the first 15 minutes. But the Bulldogs heated up late in the opening half to take a 33-31 lead at intermission.

Tech heated up in the second half, outscoring JSU 44-32 and hitting on 58.6 percent of their shots after intermission.

The Bulldogs had five players score in double figures in last year's game, led by Millsap's first career double-double. Millsap hit of 5-of-5 shots from the floor and hit on 5-of-6 free throws to total 15 points along with 10 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.

Wayne Powell scored 13 of his 14 points in the second half for the Bulldogs while Allick also turned in a career-first double-double for Tech with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Dean added 11 points for Tech while Barry Thompson chipped in with 10 along with five rebounds.

Leonard Taylor scored 18 to lead Jackson State in last year's game.

Louisiana Tech holds a 13-2 record (.867) against Southwestern Athletic Conference schools with Jackson State being the only SWAC opponent to defeat the Bulldogs.

Tech will be looking for more from its bench as the Bulldogs have used the same starting lineup in all five games and have only seen an average of 7.2 points per game off its bench. The Bulldogs bench has scored 36 points through five games, led by Thompson with 12 points and Michael Wilds with 11.

Jackson State has 12 players in the scoring column this season, led by Hilton Tompkins with 9.0 ppg and Charlie White with 8.9 ppg.

The Tigers' bench has been considerably more active than Tech's with non-starters accounting for 24 points in JSU's last game against Jacksonville State.
