Miles, Broadnax Make All-Louisiana First Team Unit
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech placed three players on the 2004 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-State Softball squad announced this weekend.
Junior Amber Miles and sophomore Bridget Broadnax both earned first team honors while junior Brittany Stanley was a second team selection as voted on by members of the LSWA.
UL-Lafayette nabbed three of the state's top individual honors as Brooke Mitchell was voted the Pitcher of the Year, Holly Tankersley the Freshman of the Year and Stefini Lotief the Coach of the Year. LSU's LaDonia Hughes was the Hitter of the Year while Southeastern Louisiana's Summer Delaneuville earned the Newcomer of the Year award.
Miles earned her first team accolades following a season that saw her bat a team best .337, including a Louisiana Tech record 68 hits. The DeSoto, Texas, native also led the Western Athletic Conference with 29 steals in 34 attempts while also scoring 29 runs.
Broadnax ended in a tie with LSU's Julie Wiese for first team honors as third base after batting .321 on the season along with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI. Also hailing from DeSoto, Texas, Broadnax batted an incredible .400 during league games this year, the best in the WAC.
Stanley received second team honors after a junior campaign that saw her bat .325 with 27 runs and 12 RBI. The Sulphur, La., native ranked second in the WAC behind her teammate Miles with 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts.
Both Broadnax and Miles were first team All-Western Athletic Conference selections this year as well while Stanley was second team all-league.
The first team infield consisted of Southeastern Louisiana catcher Karin Smith (.368, 15 HR, 46 RBI), LSU first baseman Stephanie Hill (.333, 13 HR, 54 RBI), Centenary second baseman Jordan Lansdale (.333, 40 runs, 19 RBI, LSU shortstop Lauren Delahoussaye (.299, 9 HR, 39 RBI), Broadnax (.321, 10 doubles, 22 RBI) and LSU third baseman Julie Wiese (.267, 8 HR, 29 RBI).
Hughes led the first team outfield which also consisted of LSU's Leslie Klein (.362, 13 HR, 57 RBI), Miles (.337, 29 runs, 29 SBs) and Centenary's Micah Rhodes (.348, 10 HR, 27 RBI). Miles and Rhodes tied for the third spot on the first team.
LSU's Lauren Castle (.368, 45 runs, 38 RBI) was the first team selection at designated player while Tankersley earned the utility first team spot.
Joining Mitchell on the first team squad at pitcher were LSU hurler Kristin Schmidt (36-5, 1.21 ERA, 14 shutouts, 331 strikeouts) and Northwestern State freshman Aimee Ford (21-9, 1.21 ERA, nine shutouts, 257 strikeouts).
Hill, Delahoussaye, Hughes and Mitchell were all unanimous first team selections.
LSU landed seven of the 15 first teamers on this year's squad while Louisiana Tech, UL-Lafayette and Centenary each placed two. Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State each had one player on the first team.
The second team consisted of LSU catcher Leigh Ann Danos, UL-Lafayette first baseman Lacey Bertucci, Louisiana College second baseman Trista Helverson, UL-Lafayette shortstop Tiffany Hebert, UL-Lafayette third baseman Danyele Gomez, Stanley, LSU outfielder Camille Harris, Northwestern State outfielder Lindsey Danzy, UL-Lafayette designated player Ashley Evans, Louisiana College utility Katherine Horton, Centenary pitcher Cheyenne Daries, Louisiana College pitcher Sandi Clark and Southeastern Louisiana's Delaneuville.
Nominations for the 2004 All-Louisiana team were submitted by universities sports information offices and voting was done by members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
