Mile Relay Posts Solid Time at NCAA Championships

Boxscore

AUSTIN, Texas ? Louisiana Tech?s women?s 1,600 meter relay ran the second fastest time in school history but it was not enough to advance at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the Mike A. Meyers Track Stadium.

Tech took nine athletes to the NCAA Championships it?s most to one of the premier track meets in the world since 1987. Action continues on Friday for several Lady Techsters

Troy Lewis came in 5th in his heat in the 200 meters with a time of 21.10. The Shreveport native ran a personal best of 20.90 two weeks ago at the Mid-East Regional. Lewis finished 24th overall.

The mile relay set a school record with a 3:35.02 two weeks ago at the Mid-East Regional and ran a 3:35.51 on Friday to come in 15th.

?It was good to see the mile relay run so well at the NCAA meet,? Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. ?It is great to know they are young as they and we have three of them back for three more years.?

That is quite an accomplishment for a relay team that features three freshmen and a junior, all of whom will back competing for the Lady Techsters next year.

Brenda-Grace Hunt is Tech?s best chance to garner all-American honors as the sophomore competes in the women?s javelin finals on Friday night. Hunt had a challenging route to the finals after enduring several weather delays on Wednesday. The prelims began at 1 p.m. and heat one was completed in the afternoon. Hunt was in heat two and it meant a day of sitting a waiting before the second heat finally got underway at 9:45 p.m.

Wednesday?s poor weather, which allowed on one running prelim to be run forced the NCAA to cancel all of the running semifinal heats. The top nine times from the prelims will go to the NCAA Championships finals on Saturday.

Doria Appleberry (400-meter hurdles), Nina Gilbert (400 meters) and Ayanna Alexander (Triple Jump) will all compete in their respective individual events with Alexander getting things started for Tech with her triple jump prelims at 6:15 p.m.
