BoxscoreSAN JOSE, Cal. -- San Jose State's Marquin Chandler nailed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining Thursday as the Spartans edged Louisiana Tech 88-87 win in a wild one at The Event Center.
The loss dropped Tech to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the Western Athletic Conference while SJSU moved to 4-9 and 1-3.
Tech took a 87-86 lead with 22.6 seconds left as
Donell Allick inbounded a pass off a defender's back, grabbed it and layed the ball up and in. The Bulldogs were looking for a late defensive stand when
Corey Dean was hit with his first foul of the contest with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Chandler did his part for the Spartans, and San Jose State denied the Bulldogs of a chance to steal a late victory as the Bulldogs dropped their fourth consecutive game and second straight at The Event Center.
San Jose won last season's home meeting over the Bulldogs in overtime.
After Chandler's two late free throws, Tech's
Daevon Haskins drove the ball the length of the court but the ball was knocked out of bounds with 0.7 seconds left.
Haskins' last ditch desperation shot off the inbounds pass didn't fall as the Bulldogs suffered its second straight loss by two points or less. Tech was coming off a 60-58 home loss to Fresno State.
"We got what we wanted with Daevon driving for the bucket," Richard said. "He got it to the rim but it got knocked out of bounds. We wanted to get the ball to Paul (Millsap) with 0.7 seconds left, but it didn't happen."
Tech's 87 points were the most for the Bulldogs since a 99-97 overtime win at Nevada during the 2002-03 season and the first loss scoring that many points since falling 100-89 at Louisiana-Monroe during the 1990-91 season.
Millsap picked up his 30th career double-double and led Tech with 25 points in the contest while
Corey Dean added 23 points.
Wayne Powell and
Donell Allick added 12 points each for the 'Dogs.
Alex Elam topped SJSU with 24 points while Chandler chipped in with 20.
"We were a step slow defensively all night and couldn't defend them well enough to win," Richard said. "That's the story of the game. We got the ball inside a lot tonight and that helped us score points. That's a bright side, I guess, but the defensive end was still very disappointing and cost us the game."
Both teams entered the contest as the lowest ranking scoring and shooting teams in the WAC but turned up the offensive heat, as both hit on 48.5 percent of their shots from the floor.
San Jose hit on 14-of-25 3-point attempts, the most Tech has given up this season. The Bulldogs countered with a 7-of-23 performance from long distance.
The nip-and-tuck game saw nine ties and 14 lead changes with Tech's largest advantage at five points and San Jose State's at seven points.
Louisiana Tech dominated the boards, outrebounding the Spartans 41-30.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday with a 11 p.m. contest at Hawaii.
