Bulldogs Look To Maintain Momentum Against San Jose State
RUSTON, La. -- Louisiana Tech looks for its second straight win at home Saturday as the Bulldogs play host to San Jose State in a 6:30 p.m. contest at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Youths in high school and younger will be admitted to the game for free.
The contest will also be televised live by KPXJ-UPN 21 in Shreveport, La.
Louisiana Tech is coming off a big 71-70 home win over Hawaii last Thursday and stands at 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the Western Athletic Conference while San Jose State has dropped two straight and stands at 6-14 overall and 3-8 in the WAC.
SJSU defeated Tech 88-87 at the Event Center on Jan. 13, so the Bulldogs know what the Spartans are capable of.
"San Jose always seems to play us tough," Tech coach Keith Richard said. "Phil Johnson is a great coach and always has his team ready to play. They already have one win over us, so we just have to concentrate on getting down to business and winning this important home game."
Sophomore Paul Millsap poured in 29 points and added 13 rebounds in the recent win over Hawaii and leads Louisiana Tech with 20.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game while senior guard Donell Allick is adding 11.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs.
Senior forward Wayne Powell is chipping in with 10.8 ppg and 6.5 rpg while senior guard Corey Dean rounds out Tech's double-digit scorers with 10.1 ppg and 4.1 rpg.
Junior point guard Daevon Haksins is adding 7.7 ppg for the Bulldogs and leads Tech with 5.7 assists per game.
Senior forward Marquin Chandler is SJSU's primary workhorse and is hitting for 20.9 ppg and 9.2 rpg while junior forward Alex Elam is adding 10.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg for the Spartans.
In their meeting on Jan. 15, San Jose State's Chandler nailed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining as the Spartans edged out a one-point win over Louisiana Tech in a wild one at The Event Center.
Tech took a 87-86 lead with 22.6 seconds left in that one as Allick inbounded a pass off a defender's back, grabbed it and layed the ball up and in. The Bulldogs were looking for a late defensive stand when Dean was hit with his first foul of the contest with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Chandler did his part for the Spartans, and San Jose State denied the Bulldogs of a chance to steal a late victory.
After Chandler's two late free throws, Tech's Daevon Haskins drove the ball the length of the court but the ball was knocked out of bounds with 0.7 seconds left.
Haskins' last ditch desperation shot off the inbounds pass didn't fall as the Bulldogs suffered its second straight loss by two points or less. Tech was coming off a 60-58 home loss to Fresno State.
But the Bulldogs have won 6-of-7 games from that point and feel momentum is
on their side.
"We've been playing better basketball since we faced them out there and we know this game at home is big," Allick said. "What late season game isn't big for a senior like me, Wayne, Corey or Barry (Thompson)? This is the time of year you treat every game like a championship game, so we're just going in determined to get a win."
Louisiana Tech leads San Jose State 6-2 in a series that began with a pair of Western Athletic Conference wins by the Bulldogs during the 2001-02 season. Louisiana Tech has outscored San Jose State 570-498 and has won by an average score of 71.2 - 62.2
