Boxscore FRESNO, Cal. -- Louisiana Tech continued its red-shot play Thursday as the Bulldogs stretched their win streak to five games Thursday with a 79-72 road win over Fresno State before 11,674 at the Save Mart Center.
Tech climbed to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the Western Athletic Conference while Fresno State fell to 12-7 and 6-4.
Paul Millsap recorded his 14th double-double of the season as he poured in 28 points and added 12 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech while
Corey Dean and
Wayne Powell added 13 points each for the Bulldogs, who also received 12 points from
Donell Allick.
The game was tight late, with Fresno State cutting Tech's lead down to two at 71-69 with 2:28 remaining. But an aggressive Louisiana Tech squad turned up the intensity and refused to back down, making big plays down the stretch to pull away for the win.
"I told the team in our last timeout that I couldn't help them," Tech coach Keith Richard said. "I told them there was no magic and they were going to have to make plays. Daevon (Haskins) came through with a big bucket and Wayne (Powell) added two big baskets after that to give us the win."
Making Haskins' jumper even more impressive was the fact that he had just come off the bench after hitting the floor minutes earlier with a leg cramp. Haskins' leg locked up with a cramped muscle noticable from across the court and he stayed down for minutes as the Fresno crowd booed and trainers from Tech and Fresno State worked to unlock the muscle and let the junior point guard leave the court.
But Haskins was soon back out on the court to hit a big jumper late in the game.
Louisiana Tech's surging offense connected on 50 percent (30-60) of its shots in the contest while holding Fresno State to a 39.7 shooting percentage (27-68). Tech also won the battle on the boards and out-rebounded FSU 41-37.
"Tough defense and balanced scoring combined with making plays late," Richard said. "That's what did it."
Donovan Morris hit for 13 points to lead Fresno State, which also received 12 points each from Dreike Bouldin and Chris Berry.
Both teams controlled the ball well, with Tech making 22 assists with only 11 turnovers and Fresno State dishing off 20 assists while giving the ball up 10 times. But in the end, it came down to a strong game from Millsap and the other Bulldogs as they played to win.
"Paul had a tremendous game, he was a monster out there," Richard said. "He really worked hard, but we needed the other players contributing too and they did. You can't be scared to go out and win a game. You can't play not to lose, and we didn't. Tonight we played to win."
Tech tries to stretch its streak to six wins on Saturday when the Bulldogs play at Nevada in a 9:05 p.m. contest at the Lawlor Center.
