GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Running back DeShawn Wynn scored three first half touchdowns to lead No. 10 ranked Florida to a 41-3 win over Louisiana Tech before 90,099 fans at Ben Griffin Stadium Saturday night.
Wynn scored on a pair of one-yard runs and then added a 24-yard touchdown reception from Chris Leak as the Gators built a 21-3 halftime lead and never looked back, improving their record to 2-0 while Tech fell to 0-1.
The Louisiana Tech defense did an admirable job against the Gators but six big plays of 20 or more yards ultimately spelled doom while the Bulldog offense sputtered all night long.
Florida racked up 475 yards of total offense although 231 yards of the total came on six big plays. Tech held Florida to 244 yards on the other 67 offensive snaps.
Conversely, the Bulldog offense struggled throughout the game, gaining only 162 yards of total offense, the lowest total for Louisiana Tech in the last decade. The Bulldogs finished the game with four turnovers.
?I thought this was an interesting game,? said Louisiana Tech head coach Jack Bicknell. ?I felt like we didn?t make the big plays that we had an opportunity to make. We dropped a couple of interceptions and missed out on a couple of fumbles. I felt like offensively, we didn?t make some of the catches that we could have made.
?We turned the ball over against an excellent football team and then we were in trouble.?
The Bulldogs (0-1) managed to contain the Gators early but the potent Florida offense came alive midway through the first quarter thanks to the play of running back DeShaun Foster.
Wynn broke free on a 50-yard run down to the Louisiana Tech 7-yard line. Four plays later, Wynn scored on a 1-yard rush to give the Gators a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Wynn scored again on a 2-yard rush, pushing the Florida lead to 14-0.
Wynn picked up his third touchdown of the game with 6:00 remaining in the second quarter when Florida quarterback Chris Leak connected with Wynn on a 24-yard pass, extending the lead to 21-0.
Louisiana Tech managed to get on the scoreboard late in the second quarter after defensive lineman Quarvay Winbush forced a Florida fumble recovered by Bulldog linebacker Brannon Jackson.
The Bulldogs drove to the Florida 20-yard line and kicker Danny Horwedel connected on a 37-yard field goal to close the first half scoring at 21-3.
In the second half, All-American candidate Leak took over, scoring twice on quarterback sneaks and throwing for another touchdown with an 80-yard strike to wide receiver Chad Jackson.
?I felt like defensively, we didn?t play too badly,? Bicknell said. ?They hit one big one on us which was disappointing. I had nightmares of their offense. Chris Leak is an excellent quarterback. The tough thing about Chris is that he is going to put it on the money. We put the defense in a bad position a couple of times and they made us pay.?
Leak finished the game with 13 completions on 22 attempts for 219 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 16 yards for two touchdowns.
Wynn led the Florida ground attack with 16 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Tech quarterbacks Matt Kubik and Donald Allen combined for 11 completions on 32 attempts for 117 yards and three interceptions.
Mark Dillard led all Tech running backs with 37 yards on 11 carries.
Louisiana Tech will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Lawrence, Kansas for a 6 p.m. kickoff against the Jayhawks.
