Harvey Leads Tech Golfers at USM InvitationalHATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Sophomore
Matthew Harvey ended a strong fall season by finishing 12th at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Miss Monday and Tuesday.
Harvey shot a three-round total of 217 (74-70-73) to lead the Bulldogs to an eighth place finish in the 11-team event which capped off Tech?s fall schedule.
Tech head coach Jean Hall said it wasn?t his team?s best performance of the fall by any means.
?It was a lot of the same old stuff,? Hall said. ?We had some bright spots; I think we shot the fourth best team score today. We just aren?t consistent. We?ll have one good round or we?ll have three guys play well but not a fourth. I?m really searching for an identity for this team.?
Harvey, who captured the individual title at the Squire Creek Invitational in his last outing in mid-October and who earned the WAC Golfer of the Month honor for his performance, earned his fourth top 20 finish in five fall tournaments.
?Even Matthew didn?t hit the ball well this week, at least not for him, yet he still finished 12th,? Hall said. ?He?s going a really bright future ahead of him.?
In addition to Harvey?s totals, Louisiana Tech saw
Amrith de Soysa finish 29th,
Dustin Baker finish 35th,
Timothy Byrd and
Clinton Shepard finish 45th at the tournament.
?I am encouraged by
Timothy Byrd who performed admirably at his first tournament,? Hall said. ?Dustin shot a good round today and Clinton had a couple of 73s. Amrith shot a 69 (in the second round).
?We will start our off-season work when we return for the winter quarter. I?m starting to see some passion and competitiveness with this team that hasn?t been there before. Hopefully, this off-season will give us a chance to improve. I think the talent is there to be a much better team.?
UAB won the team competition with an 858, edging Southern Miss who finished second at 859.
