Where Are They Now: Catching Up with Sean Cangelosi
Sean Cangelosi made one of the biggest catches in Louisiana Tech history as his 28-yard touchdown reception propelled the Bulldogs to a 29-28 win over 18th ranked Alabama on Sept. 18, 1999.
Now almost eight years removed from that heroic event, Sean is no longer that lanky, ruffled hair young man who snared the ball from the air on the warm September night at Legion Field in Birmingham.
He is a husband, a father and a businessman.
Sean earned his degree in computer information systems from Louisiana Tech in 2000 after a stellar four-year playing career that saw him etch his name in the record books as well as in the annals of Bulldog lore.
The Baton Rouge native still ranks ninth in career receptions (155), tenth in career receiving yards (2,111) and fourth in career touchdown receptions (21).
And as far as Tech fans are concerned, he ranks No. 1 in biggest catches.
?It?s funny,? Sean said. ?Pretty much anytime I meet someone from Tech that I?ve never met before, they will want to talk about that play. I feel bad because I?m not a great storyteller so I usually leave them wanting more. I?m like, ?Yeah, I caught it and we won.? It?s always the first thing that comes up. It?s fun to talk about Tech and old times.?
And although Tech will always be close to Sean?s heart, these days the memories of the blue and red play third fiddle behind the two women in his life, wife Kasey and six-month-old daughter Carsyn.
?She?s awesome,? he said talking about the newest addition to the family. ?We?re loving (being parents) and ready to try again.?
Kasey, who was formerly Kasey Solley of West Monroe and who is a 2000 UL-Monroe graduate, wasn?t all that impressed with her eventual husband?s football heroics when they first met after Sean opened the Smoothie King in Ruston in 2000.
?She claimed that she had never heard of me,? Sean said. ?I don?t believe it, but she?s sticking to her story.?
The couple began dating and continued to date long distance after Sean sold his Smoothie King in Ruston and moved back home and bought three Smoothie King stores.
?Owning your own businesses can be good and bad,? he said. ?There are some days I?d like a 9 to 5 job, but there are also some freedoms (of being your own boss).?
Sean and Kasey eventually married in November 12, 2005. Although he claims he doesn?t remember numbers and dates very well, he is able to remember that one.
?You?re going to get me in trouble,? Sean joked after pausing to remember his wedding date. ?I?m awful with numbers (and dates). We?d finish a game, and I couldn?t remember the score the next day.?
However, he doesn?t have trouble remembering 29-28; that ones embedded in his memory after the heroic ending.
?It was definitely the biggest play of my career,? Sean said. ?I don?t know what I would have been remembered for otherwise; probably the fumble inside the Florida State 5-yard line. People would have said, ?Hey, this is Sean. He lost the Florida State game.??
When Sean returns to Tech, you can bet Bulldog fans will want to talk about that fateful September night in Birmingham in 1999 ? one of the few dates he actually can remember.
