BOISE, Idaho -- Louisiana Tech opened Western Athletic Conference play Friday night with a 2-2 tie against Boise State in a game that head coach Kevin Sherry called "the weirdest soccer experience I've ever been a part of."
Sherry and his Lady Techsters had to overcome a 2-0 deficit and a snow storm to come back and tie Boise State with two late goals. Due to the deteriorating weather conditions, the two overtime periods could not be played as both teams came away with one point for the tie.
"I'm overjoyed," Sherry said. "It's the strangest game I've ever been a part of. It started snowing right before the half and it just got thicker and thicker in the second half. I've never seen snow flakes that size; they were as big as my fist. "The players couldn't stand up. I've never seen anything like it. You couldn't see the lines; it was just so slippery."
Tech (10-2-2, 0-0-1 WAC) recorded just the program's third tie ever in league play as the Lady Techsters will attempt to earn the first win ever in WAC action Sunday when they play at Idaho at noon.
Sherry said he was extremely pleased with the play of his team against the Broncos, a program that Tech was 0-3 against all-time heading into the game.
"Boise State is an exceptional team," Sherry said. "Their passing was the best we've seen this year. It's a dream start for us. They our one of the top teams in our conference and to come here and get a point is one of the greatest successes we've had this year. This game was full of drama."
Boise State scored the first goal of the game in the 45th minute of the opening half as Andrea Huerta scored from five yards out on an assist by Danielle Schwalbe.
The game remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when the Broncos added another goal as Shannon Saxton scored to make it 2-0.
However, Tech would not quit. Denise Wilson scored in the 86th minute of the game from 12-yards out cutting the Boise State lead to 2-1. The goal was the 43rd of the season for Tech, breaking the single season mark for the program.
One minute later, Oliva Lukasewich tied the game at 2-2 as she scored in the 87th minute on an assist by Brooke Lanie.
"We changed some things around in the second half," Sherry said. "They snow started getting really heavy. It looked like there was no way we were going to come back. We became more direct because of the conditions and we scored those two late goals. It was unbelievable."
The match was called after regulation due to the field conditions.
Boise State outshot Tech 10-5.
