Tech Struggles on Final Day of WAC Championships

2008 WAC Championship Final Results

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Louisiana Tech lost its top golfer and its momentum on the final day of the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championships held at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club as the Bulldogs fell three spots and finished seventh.

Jean Hall's Bulldogs saw sophomore Matthew Harvey withdrawal due to health reasons one day after shooting a one-under-par 71. As a team, Tech couldn't overcome his loss as almost the entire squad struggled, shooting a 30-over-par 318 in the final round.

Tech entered the day alone in fourth place through the first two rounds and had hopes of moving up on the final day. However, junior Ryan Robertson was the lone Bulldog to shoot respectable, firing a two-over-par 74.

Meanwhile, Robertson's teammates were inconsistent as Amrith de Sosya shot 80, Corey Bartlett shot 81 and Chad Bailey shot 83. Minus Harvey's presence, all four scores counted as the Bulldogs dropped to seventh in the final standings.

For the tournament, Robertson finished tied for 16th with a three-round total of 230 followed by de Soysa (233, T20th), Bartlett (237, 29th) and Bailey (240, T31st).

Harvey entered the final day tied for 12th but couldn't complete the round.

New Mexico State won the team title with a team total of 891 followed by Boise State (896), Fresno State (908), Idaho (919), Nevada (920), San Jose State (926), Tech (931), Hawaii (948) and Utah State (948).

Boise State's Troy Merritt won the medalist honor, running away from his competition with a seven-under-par 209, a full 10 strokes better than his closest competitor in Fresno State's Grant Doverspike.
