RUSTON, La. - A goal in the 69th minute broke a 1-1 tie as Louisiana Tech fell 2-1 to Hawai'i on Friday at the Lady Techster Soccer Field.
The Lady Techsters (11-5-1, 0-5 WAC) got a goal from junior Kiva Gresham, a defender who played the entire game on offense. Her sixth goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Scottie Culton. Her fifth assists of the season was the team's record 41st assist in 2009.
In the second period, Hawai'i (5-8-0, 0-5 WAC) broke the tie with a header coming not off of a corner kick, but after the kick.
Tech was able to create many offensive opportunities including one with freshman Mo Rockwell. The Salt Lake City, Utah native had the ball with just the goalkeeper in front of her, but kicked it right to her. It was one of six saves for the Hawaii goalkeepers.
"There was a lapse of concentration towards the end and that was the difference between the two teams," Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. "I think we were right there. Our girls gave 100 percent."
Louisiana Tech's offense produced more shots in the second period (seven) than they did in all of their previous game against Fresno State (six). They had twelve shots, seven on goal, and Hawai'i had 18 shots, 10 on goal.
"Hawai'i is a very strong team and very athletic," Sherry said. "They are quick and strong, just one of the top teams we will ever play. We held our ground and created a lot of opportunities. These are freshmen and sophomores going against juniors and seniors, you could tell the physical difference. We were getting beat up and still in the game. I think we did really well today."
It was a physical game with 14 fouls against the Rainbow Wahine compared to just five against the Lady Techsters.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cat Buchanan had eight saves for the Lady Techsters. Culton had four shots to lead Tech and was one of seven different players to record one shot on goal.
LA Tech's five game losing streak is the longest since 2007 and will try to end it on Oct. 23 against New Mexico State on senior day at the Lady Techster Soccer Field.
