MOSCOW, Idaho - Despite outhitting Idaho .230 to .212 and career days from Kassia Pinto and Clara Vido, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team was upended on the road in five sets (25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 21-25, 15-10) as the Vandals took the match Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym.
Pinto tallied a career-high 18 kills while picking up her sixth double-double of the season and Vido totaled a career-high 25 kills en route to her fifth double-double of the season. Bianca Bin dished out a career-high 57 assists while Kara Jones notched a career-high seven digs in addition to her 14 kills and seven blocks.
With her 57 assists, Bin passed Kelly Jefferson (2,528) for fifth all-time on the Tech career list.
Vido's 25 kills marks the most by a Lady Techster since the NCAA ruled that all sets be played to a total of 25 points rather than the previous 30.
The Vandals jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the match before the Lady Techsters responded and tied the match at 12 apiece behind back-to-back kills from Jennifer Goodwin and Vido. Trading the next two points to keep the score tied, the Vandals put together a mini scoring run to build a lead that they would never relinquish as they took the first set 25-22.
In the second set the Techsters started off extremely sluggish as Idaho built a commanding 20-16 lead. However, the Lady Techsters withstood the early setback and fought back with vengeance. Following back-to-back kills from Jones and a service ace from Goodwin, the Techsters put together an impressive 9-1 scoring run to take the set, 25-21, and even the match heading into the break.
Out of the break Tech picked up right where they left off in the prior set by building a 10-6 lead. However, Idaho would tie things up at 17 apiece. With nine ties and six lead changes, both squads were looking to gain a competitive edge in the set. The Vandals looked like they had done that as Idaho put Tech into a bind by forcing a set point with the score at 24-22. However, Tech responded to force their own set point at 25-24. Unfortunately it would not be enough as Idaho took the final three points to claim the set.
In the fourth set the Lady Techsters refused to back down. The Techster defense stifled the Idaho offensive attack by limiting them to a match-low .025 hitting percentage. Tech cruised to a 25-21 fourth set win to force a decisive fifth set on the Idaho home floor.
Unfortunately the Lady Techsters were unable to put away the Vandals on their home floor as Idaho hit .389 in the fifth set en route to a 15-10 win to claim the match. Louisiana Tech returns action Monday night at 7 p.m. as the Lady Techsters host Utah State at the Thomas Assembly Center.
