Quotes from Fall Practice No. 13

Aug. 18, 2010

Head coach Sonny Dykes

"This was the first time we went live. We went about 45 minutes and got in about 81 or 82 plays in that 45 minutes. The pace was fast and frantic. I thought we executed pretty well but you could tell we were tired in some spots. We missed some tackles, which you're going to do in your first scrimmage. WE have to finish blocks better and little things like that. Overall, though, I thought it was a good day. We had one turnover in over 80 plays; I thought the offense did a good job of taking care of the ball.

On Colby Cameron:
"He's just a good athlete. He's one of those guys that is a really smart football player and has a knack for seeing things and understanding things and he runs well. He's a guy we're trying to get some reps at receiver and he's done some good things for us. The biggest part of it, because he understands the offense and he understands the timing at the receiver position because he has been quarterback, is there is a lot of carryover between the two positions in terms of how to get open and when to get open. He's a good player, he wants to play and he wants to help the football team. I think that's the best way for him to do it.

"I think he'll be a guy that plays some for us. He's very conscientious about being in the right place at the right time and he does a good job.

On white jerseys for Colby Cameron and Tarik Hakmi:
"We just wanted tosee how they responded to that. When you have some guys that are going to be more runner-type guys, you want to see how they respond to contact, if they have a knack for finishing runs and taking care of the football, all of those type of things. We wanted to get them some reps in full contact.

Defensive Coordinator Tommy Spangler

"I try not to get too up or down because it's never as good as you thought or as bad as you thought, it's probably somewhere in between. With the first day going to the ground, does it shock me we missed some tackles? No, we probably missed too many. But it's good sometimes to make those kind of mistakes so you can make a point of it and emphasize it even more. That's one of our big goals as a defense is that we have to tackle very well."

"You're going to miss some tackles throughout the course of a game but being a great defensive tackling football team is one of our main goals. I think that good defenses tackle well and poor defenses don't. In my opinion, a great run isn't the product of a great run; it is the product of poor tackling."

"As far as effort, want to, passion, trying to fly around - I've been real pleased. I've been pleased the whole camp. Our attitude's better than it's ever been and I think we have a special group of guys. We just have to continue to try and build on it. They are tired - it has been a heckuva camp. You sit out here and watch us, our pace on offense is so fast. I'm not sure any other team goes that fast. So [as a defense] you have to be disciplined, you have to be in shape, and get the calls."

"I'm throwing a lot on our defense right now with different multiple calls that not only you have to get lined up but you have to execute. It's all going fast but we're making a lot of progress. The bottom line is the attitude of our guys is good and as long as they want to keep getting better, we'll get better."
