RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech fell to Arkansas State 1-0 on Sunday at Lady Techster Soccer Field.
Tech controlled the majority of the possessions and outshot ASU 13-6, 8-2 in the first period, but a goal in the 79th minute was the difference as the Lady Techsters dropped to 2-2
"It was a disappointing game to lose," Tech head coach Kevin Sherry said. "It was a tight game and could have gone either way. I think we had an emotional hangover from Friday after coming back to win like we did. We just got caught on a bad day."
The lone goal was scored by the Red Wolves' Kara Nitti off of a corner kick by Michele Clark. Corner kicks have been an Achilles' heal so far this season for the Tech defense as three of their four goals allowed have come off corner kicks.
The goal came on one of just three shots on goal by the Red Wolves. Tech had five shots on goal, but also had opportunities to score which never amounted to a shot.
In the 62nd minute, freshman Emily Brennan had the ball to the right of the goal with the ASU goalkeeper out of position. Brennan crossed the ball which was deflected by a Red Wolves' defender.
In the 69th minute, senior Kiva Gresham had perhaps the best chance to score for Tech. She emerged at the top of the penalty box in the center of the field, one step ahead of an ASU defender. However, her shot was right to goalkeeper Susan Brown who helped improve the Red Wolves record to 2-0-1.
Junior Olivia Lukasewich led Tech with five shots, one on goal. Lukasewich, who scored the game-tying goal in Friday's 2-1 win over Sam Houston State after switching positions from defender to forward, made the switch to forward again in the 80th minute to provide a spark. However, Tech still couldn't find the back of the net.
"We could have made some of the shots a more realistic scoring opportunity," Sherry said, "but we wasted them with silly choices like turning and shooting from 35 yards instead of taking the ball and driving it in or doing a give-and-go. There are all kinds of things that you can do, but we just seemed to pick the wrong option."
The Lady Techsters make a short road trip to Grambling State to face the Tigers on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
